About Tyler
Expert Analysis
Brian Flinn | Prep Hoops Scout
Betsey averaged 20 points in his two games at the NPSI and shot the ball very well as usual. It’s his ability to create off the dribble and get his own shot that makes him tough to cover. The form on his shot is effortless and he was able to get himself open and make defenses pay on both Thursday and Sunday. Cincinnati fans should be very excited about Betsey’s arrival to campus, as he will give the Bearcats a dangerous scorer from day one.

Ranked 2nd overall in New England, Betsey recently announced his pledge to Cincinnati. The consensus Top 50 prospect in the country was a priority recruit for Wes Miller and his staff and ultimately chose the Bearcats over offers from Alabama and UConn. Expect the 6’8” wing to make an instant impact next year with his scoring ability and perimeter shooting.

Betsey is one the best prospects in New England. He is a lethal scorer from all three levels with size and skill that is difficult to match up with. Betsey is also effective in both half court and transition situations, using his length and athleticism to consistently get above the rim. Betsey holds a vast list of division 1 offers, including Duke, Cincinnati, Seton Hall and more. Expect a big time season from Betsey.

. Where Teng lacks in size, Betsey certainly does not; if he does not have an opposing matchup that is doubling him or compares to his 6 ‘8 frame, he’s looking to rise up as soon as he catches the rock. He also can create his own shot, and is willing to do so if his first look isn’t there. Where he compares to Kyle Kuzma is he is a multi faceted scorer with a very high talent level to match; however at his size there are times where he perhaps falls too in love with the perimeter and you prefer him to mix in some more inside looks. Players that have a tendency to fall in love with the perimeter too much struggle with shot selection at times, and both Kuzma and Betsey have fallen victim to that at certain points. Kuzma’s offensive efficiency rating ranked 102nd in the NBA Last Season (SB Nation, Kuzma), and this spring Betsey averaged .88 expected points per shot taken. Essentially, both of these players are extremely talented scorers with tremendous upside, while being reasonably effective on the defensive side, but both share similar struggles when going through cold spells shooting the ball.

Betsey is a long and athletic hooper that can get a bucket at will. He has a variety of moves with the basketball, which when combined with his length and athleticism make him a tough matchup for any defender and position. Betsey has the ability to put the ball on the floor and finish through or around defenders, while also being able to heat up from behind the arc. He can also rise up on on the defense for dunks and throw down alley oops from teammates. Betsey’s circiuit is off to a hot start, standing out last weekend at the KYDA invitational.
