Today, Prep Hoops begins to break down the class player by player explaining why players landed where they landed. The first thing that should be noted is the 2019 Rankings are based on production along with projection to their senior season.
1. Julian Smith Sapulpa Point Guard
Smith may not end up being the top prospect by the time he graduates, but as of now you can’t argue with Smith being #1 especially when you look at the numbers. Smith in Class 6A last year average 15 points per game at Sapulpa. He is a dynamic guard with a nice handle and a smooth jumper. Smith may not have as a high of a celling as some players in the 2019 Class, but has continued to progress. The only ? mark with Smith right now is will he grow another couple of inches?
2. Kobe Burgess Ada Combo Guard
Burgess is a very intriguing young prospect that can play the Point or off the ball at the two. I think over time Burgess will end up at the 1. He uses his quickness to get to the basket creating problems for defenders. Burgess has to work on improving his outside jumper if he wants to continue to progress his game. Defensively Burgess is outstanding at getting into the passing lanes and creating havoc. He has a high ceiling with a chance to turn into a Division I prospect if he can continue to work hard and improve his game.
3. Hunter Staton Stillwater Post
Staton might have the highest ceiling out of any Oklahoma 2019 prospect. The size of Staton plays a lot into his high potential as he is already hovering around 6’9. The thing that sets Staton apart from other Posts is his ability to shoot the ball. This summer on the OKC part of the Oklahoma Run PWP 15U Under Armour team Staton showed he can play against the best. Staton has improved his footwork over the past year. Heading into his sophomore campaign at Stillwater Staton is still raw, but the upside for him is huge.
4. Micah Thomas Putnam City North Combo Guard
What position is Thomas is the big question as he enters his sophomore year at Putnam City North. The height of Thomas may force him to be a Point, but his game fits more of a two guard at this moment. He is shifty, quick with a really nice finish around the basket. Thomas is an above average shooter from three-point range. Defense is an area Thomas must improve to take his game to another level. If Thomas can develop the killer mentality he could be a very special talent by the time he his a senior. Thomas looked up to Micah Speight this past year who certainly has the killer instinct.
5. Drew Tennial Edmond Memorial Guard
Tennial is a 6’5 Guard with uber potential. He entered the first set of rankings at #5 with his great potential on the floor for the Bulldogs. Tennial is very long with great athleticism. At this point Tennial projects as a wing likely, but some think he may end up a Point Guard with his ball handling skills. It will be interesting to follow Tennial at Edmond Memorial this next season. Tennial has very high potential with his ability to score the rock and create for others.
