Continue ReadingEven with the Hawkeyes and Cyclones dueling on the gridiron, we at Prep Hoops Iowa have basketball on the mind. This weekend marks the unofficial start to the 2016/17 hoops season for us, and we’ll start the season with a bang in Ames.
With over 200 prospects — from frosh to seniors — at the All Iowa Attack Field House Saturday morning (2019/20) and evening (2016/17), we’ve taken the liberty to preview some of the top names to look out for.
2018 Marco Balderas (South Hamilton)
Balderas will be showcasing some elite vision and flashy passing in the evening session on Saturday. He’s only 5’8 but makes a huge impact on the game with his ability to create for teammates. Always fun to watch, Balderas averaged 10 points and 4.8 assists per game last season for the Hawks.
2018 Grant DeMeulenaere (Grand View Christian)
Slick handles and savvy play highlight this floor general’s game. He was the starting point guard for a state-qualifying GV Christian squad last season….and he’s a lights-out shooter too.
2018 Carter Frey (Valley)
Frey has spent time at both guard positions over the past two years, but as he continues to develop with Valley we see him more as a point guard. Great speed is his best strength, and he can shoot it too. We’ll be interested to see how the 5’11 guard stacks up against some of the state’s best true point guards.
2019 Noah Hart (Waukee)
Another who has spent time as a shooting guard and a point guard since we started watching him play. The 6’2 sophomore is a sharpshooter who can handle the ball and will likely see his career unfold as a point. Hart is a kid who has barely scratched the surface of his potential, and there’s a chance he may not be close to done growing.
2019 Trey Hinote (Greene County)
The 6′ scoring point point guard is as skilled as they come in the state, and he could be in for a huge sophomore season with Greene county. He was the best player on a very good Iowa Cornsharks 15U squad this spring and summer, and shined with the 17U squad as well.
2018 Brady Sartorius (Mount Pleasant)
Iowa’s 12th-ranked 2018, the Iowa Barnstormer product is certainly one of the more athletic guards in the state, and pairs blow-by ability with some solid defensive prowess. Sartorius averaged 16.5 points, 3.4 assists and 2.8 steals per game last season as a sophomore.
2018 Hunter Strait (Cedar Rapids Washington)
Quite possibly the best point guard at this event that’s loaded with point guards, our 6th-ranked 2018 Hunter Strait will be in Ames to wreck-shop on Saturday. He spent his summer putting up some gaudy numbers on the 16U circuit with Team Iowa, and is a guy who can seemingly score at will with elite skill and great court awareness.
2019 Will Turner (Gilbert)
Turner was a star while playing up a grade level with the Iowa Wolves’ 16U squad in the spring, and it was clear then that he was emerging as one of 2019s best point guards. He’s a lights-out shooter with a nice handle, that enough will make him hard-to-handle at Gilbert next season.
2019 Thomas Faber (Dowling)
There’s a lot of upside here with a kid who already has emerged as one of the best overall prospects in his class. A 6’2 Dowling product, Faber could gain several more inches before he’s done growing, and already has a set of skills in place that made him dominant at the 15U level last season. It will be tough to get playing time in a loaded Doing backcourt, but look for his star to shine sooner rather than later.
