The lists compiled will be organized based on year and position, and will only include players that have open recruitments and have yet to make a verbal commitment. It’s impossible for us to mention every kid that boosted their stock throughout the summer, but we’ve narrowed down some of the players that took the biggest jumps in improvement and interest from colleges. Here’s part two of the 2017 point guards.
Gregory “Alden” Parham | 6’2” | Monacan/River City Reign Parham
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #49
He could be nicknamed “Big Shot Parham,” because whether it was the high school season or AAU he stepped up big and hit shots with the game on the line when needed. A crafty ballhandler with a high IQ, Parham can play on or off the ball and can score in a number of ways from all over the court. He has received interest from a number of schools at different levels.
Domenick Fragala | 5’10” | John Champe/Higher Level
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #54
After transferring to John Champe from Bishop O’Connell last season, Fragala helped lead Champe to the VHSL 4A State Semifinals, and his solid play continued all summer for Higher Level. He’s not the biggest or most athletic, but Fragala’s savvy and makes tough shots while displaying good feel and a high motor at either guard position. His competitiveness and skill set on the offensive end has him projected to be a scholarship level player.
Kimani Donovan | 6’2” | Deep Run/Team Richmond Garner Road
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #55
There’s no doubt that Donovan is talented, especially in the scoring department when he really gets it going. He has good size and length, is an underrated athlete and once he gets hot he’s been known to hang double digits in a hurry against talented teams, including 15 in a five minute span against Big Shots Elite in July. He’s had a number of schools that have reached out to him at all levels.
Tyree Golston | 6’0” | Tallwood/Team Loaded 757
New Offers: St. Thomas Aquinas
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #75
Always a talented scoring guard, Golston took a serious jump in consistency this summer, and looks to have filled out nicely. He’s a three level scorer that can either be the primary ball handler or pushed off the ball for instant offense. He picked up an offer from D2 St. Thomas Aquinas (NY), and has a handful of other scholarship programs and a host of D3 schools interested in him.
Oliver Lynch-Daniels | 6’1” | Oak Hill/JUICE All Stars
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #91
He doesn’t play for Oak Hill’s A team because of their backcourt that consists of four high major recruits, but Lynch-Daniels is a tough playmaker that is lights out from deep and does not back down. He had a big showing at Scouts Focus All American camp, and was a consistent contributor for a solid JUICE team, showing that he could be a scholarship player moving forward.
Corey Pelham | 5’10” | Lake Braddock/D1 Team Flight
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #111
Shooters at the point guard spot are a premium and that’s why almost every D3 school in the DMV is high on Pelham. He doesn’t have great size, but he has a quick trigger off the bounce, can run the pick-and-roll to make plays and his deep range stretches the defense and makes him a zone buster.
Khalil Williams-Diggins | 6’0” | West Potomac/NOVA Cavaliers
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #116
With good size and athleticism, Williams-Diggins is a two-way playmaker at the point guard position that is a mismatch for guards at the high school level. He has a developing skill set offensively, but he’s already a tough guard in transition with his athleticism and has shown the ability to knock down the perimeter jumper. He’s sure to see a number of schools recruiting him with a good senior season.
James Smith | 5’11” | Halifax/Team Loaded 757 Astrop
Vantage Hoops Ranking: #132
Smith showed versatility on the offensive end this summer, going from a main scoring threat at Halifax and showing that he can be the tough, reliable guard that gets you into sets and breaks down the defense when nothing is there. The strong lead guard set the tone for 757 Astrop’s team that won a lot of games on toughness, and that’s why Smith, along with a number of other players from that team, are being actively recruited by D2 and D3 schools.
