- Simon Saves the Day. Simon’s commitment to Elon seems to have lifted some pressure off of him, he’s playing free and getting results. Today he got the Minnesota Comets a victory with 27 points against I-Can All Stars including a top of the key isolation attack to get his time a tie and then a buzzer beating block to put them in overtime. Wright sunk four treys. Lots of college programs upset this week that Wright didn’t pick their school.
- The Hot Hand. Owen Chose had one score in the first half, but then put up 27 points in the second half. It got to the point that he was just pulling up from a step inside the volleyball and making. That happened twice. His feet set treys and one dribble pulls came from all over the court. Chose made a single digit game into a blowout.
- Jordan’s Fight. We caught the tail end of Jordan Horn’s first game when he scored four times late but it was his first half battle of 18 points and defensive intensity. The scoring was a combination of his deep range and his attacking finishes that were acrobatic in nature. Horn was so impressive with his defensive effort and offensive playmaking that he was offered by Western Carolina immediately after the game.
- Berhow’s Trademark. I honestly think that Trae Berhow has had a double-double in 90 percent of the games I’ve watched him play in the last two years. Tonight he had 24 points and 13 boards mixing in a couple feet set treys with pull-ups, physical attacks, and off ball worker baskets. One of the best rebounding wings out there. American, Drake, UWGB, Boston U, Northern Illinois, and others were watching.
- 100! Because Bigfoot Hoops doesn’t have a running time rule or a mercy rule the wide open game between the Fury and the French squad resulted in 100 points for the Fury on a Mitchell Sueker dunk. Mitch also hit three treys showing a soft touch in a 6-foot-8 frame. Myles Hanson also had a dozen points including a couple threes.
- Robin’s Good Too. Simon Wright and Trae Berhow were excellent but Burt Hedstrom and Dedoch Chan also had big games for the Comets and Fury respectively. Hedstrom scored 13 with three treys plus a great defensive effort while Chan was excellent with his back to the basket and facing up. Chan even sprinted the floor for an impressive coast to coast basket for Powerhouse Minnesota.
- Select Wins the Pool. Minnesota Select 17s have a lot of young guys so they have suffered some close losses but the end of their year is going very well. Today they beat Mercury Elite and the Select guards seriously out-performed their counterparts. Brian Smith was fantastic scoring 15 points with six boards and young talent Luke Martens and Jake Binley were jack of all trades producers hitting double figures, leading the team in boards and assists, and defended.
- That’s 47! Pulley won their fourth game of the weekend, third of their Bigfoot pool. That puts them at 47 wins and three away from 50 for the year. Gary Trent Jr did what he does, exploded for 27 points, led his team to a 25 point win, and sat down and watched the bench finish things off.
- 20 for Wright. D1 Minnesota bounces back from their second loss of July to win tonight’s first bracket play game led by 20 points from McKinley Wright.
- 15s Player of the Day. That would be Matt Johnson of Fergus Falls and Comets Schmidt 15s. He carried the Comets in a couple games already this weekend.
