One that doesn’t always lend to great shooting but still still provided an opportunity for players to get the feel of an arena and put their skills on display. Here is a list of prospects who played well this weekend including a freshman that should make a big difference on a state title contender.
Kevin Norman (6’4 F, Peabody, 2017) – Norman showed off his good looking jump shot this weekend. Even when it doesn’t go in, it feels like it will. He’s extremely athletic with the ability to guard the 1 through 4. Rebounds at a high rate and has improved his ball handling even more.
Melvion Flanagan (5’9 PG, Peabody, 2020) – It’s good to see freshman start making a name for themselves within a program and with Ced Russell down on Saturday, Flanagan showed he’ll be ready to help run the show. Two years ago he jumped 33 inches at a combine and he’s got the skills to back up that athleticism.
Jimel London (5’9 PG, East Ascension, 2018) – London continued to show why he’s invaluable to any team he plays for. As a leader on and off the court, he takes control like you’d want your PG too. Rarely turns the ball over and never forces a shot. EA is in great hands going forward after he helped lead them to Top 28 last season.
Jaylen Hawkins (5’9 PG, Scotlandville, 2017) – Hawkins continues to improve his jumper but his best work is still done of the defensive end. He’s got the ability to remove a key guard from the game whenever need be with elite defense. On offense with Smart at Team USA, he handled the ball quite well and helped keep the offense moving.
Jordan Wright (6’5 G, Dunham, 2019) – One of the top freshman in the state and will certainly become a national prospect soon enough. Wright can score from anywhere on the court and get others involved. His thick frame at that skill level makes him tough to defend with a guard or post.
Tyveon Spurlock (5’10 PG, Dunham, 2019) – Spurlock is another freshman on what is a loaded young Dunham roster. It must be nice to feel that comfortable with the ball in the hands of two rising sophomore. He can knock down shots or get to the rim. Defensively, no guard is a mismatch for him.
Earnest was a handful with improved frame and skill.Raymond McKay (5’9 G, Ponchatoula, 2017) – McKay really stole the show on Friday evening as he accounted for almost every point down the stretch in a win. He’s impossible to stay in front of and knocked down open jumpers on well. Small frame but with some work, will certainly find a home at the next level.
John Jones (5’10 G, University Lab, 2017) – Jones was purely a shooter last year with the occasion drive or pull up off of a pump fake but with seniors gone, he’s asked to do much more. If this weekend is any indication, that won’t be a problem at all. The crafty guard showed his ability to score in a variety of ways.
Tyron Price (6’1 PG, Mentorship Academy, 2017) – Price is more of a scoring guard but he still found a way to get others involved. Best in isolation situations where he can use his first step and length to get around defenders. Needs to be more consistent on defense but his length gives him an upper hand.
Azahren Earnest (6’6 F, Southern Lab, 2017) – Earnest is a handful at the high school level. With a plethora of moves around the rim and the quickness to give even the quickest of post defenders trouble, he can score just about whenever he wants. Consistently led the team and rebounds at a high level as well. Just scratching the surface.
