With the ODAC and CAC heavily represented in the state, two of the conferences many consider among the best in division three, the state of VA is heavily recruited by a number of schools. Many of the kids who are playing division three in VA were recruited by multiple schools in these conferences, and all of them landed some kind of gem in the process. Today we take a look at the class for Lynchburg College, the reigning ODAC champs. After a memorable season, the Hornets look to continue their success with a big class.
Record Last Season: 23-7 (ODAC Champs)
Incoming VA Recruits: Brett Buisson (Mills Godwin), Andre Brown (Williamsburg Christian), Connor Schroeder (Citadel/Miller School), Cody Lang (Amherst), Evan Clark (Deep Run), Deonta Porter (Greenbrier Christian), Davis Hester (Greenbrier Christian), Isaiah Morton (Radford), Logan Seacrest (Bridgewater/Massaponex)
There’s nothing like being the best team in the conference to help recruit kids, and Lynchburg’s incredible season doesn’t look like a short-term thing. The ODAC Champs were 13-4 in the conference, and doubled as both regular season and conference tournament champions, earning them a birth in the NCAA Tournament. They reload with a big, well rounded recruiting class that should help continue the success they’ve had in the last few years.
The Hornets struck it big after most of their class was in, when 2015 Miller School star Connor Schroeder decided to transfer from The Citadel to be closer to home. The 6’7” wing is a sniper from deep with good size, and he contributed with 10 minutes and 5.9 points per game as a freshman at the division one level. He has a combination of size and skill that allows him to fill it up from all over the court, and with his immediate eligibility he should be an impact player next year for Lynchburg.
In the backcourt, the Hornets landed a pair of guards that can light it up in 6’1” Brett Buisson of Mills Godwin and 5’11” Andre Brown of Williamsburg Christian. Buisson, who was one of the highest scoring guards in the Richmond area, is a smart scorer that is always moving without the ball and has a quick release and deep range on his jumper. Brown is a capable guard that can play on and off the ball, and once he gets it going from deep he can really hurt a defense for helping off him.
In the front court, they landed a pair of athletic and defensive minded wings that should compliment well with the scoring guards they got. Evan Clark, a 6’2” wing from Deep Run, is a defensive stopper and hustler that doesn’t mind doing the dirty work and is a good athlete that can finish in transition and help on the glass. They also landed Cody Lang, a long 6’7” forward from Amherst County that can guard on the perimeter and in the post, and he’s athletic enough to run with their guards and finish in transition.
As if that wasn’t enough, the Hornets also grabbed a few under the radar recruits, including a pair of Greenbrier Christian teammates in 6’1” combo guard Deonte Porter and 6’5” wing Davis Hester. Porter missed his senior season due to injury, but he showed good burst and athleticism with the ball in his hands his junior year, and he’s a versatile scorer that can make plays for himself and others. Hester has a chance to be a key cog for them because of his ability to shoot it from deep at 6’5”.
Add in a state champion in 6’2” Isaiah Morton of Radford and Bridgewater transfer Logan Seacrest and you have one of the deepest classes in the state. Expect the Hornets to continue to be in contention and recruit well throughout the state of Virginia.
