C Cameron Krutwig (Young Legends 17U)
The 6’9” big bodied center went head to head with a player of similar size and bulk in Anthony Cameron in one of his matchups over the weekend who is among the top handful of five men in the class. The Jacobs rising senior proved why he will be the top center in the new rankings. Krutwig is a physical presence down low that knows how to use his strength to create space by banging down low with other centers. The Jacobs big man utilized several spin moves as well as a soft touch on short jump shots. Great footwork for a player of his size. Plus passer that sees over the double team finding shooters and cutters. He was solid rebounding. Mid-major plus prospect with high major post potential.
PG Jacob Keller (Young Legends 17U)
Keller might not have led Young Legends in scoring all weekend, but he very well might have been their most important player. The lefty combo guard is making the full transition to playing on the ball and has shown he is more than capable of it. Keller is a slick ball handler that gets anywhere he wants on the floor using hesitation and a tight handle. He works well in the pick and roll. Really understands the offense and directs his teammates. Plays with a swagger and confidence that transfers over to his teammates. Distributes well in the half court finding his shooters when getting penetration in the lane. Sound decision maker that reads the defense and makes quality dishes. Doesn’t shoot it a ton, but has improved his three point stroke. If he can get this down consistently he is going to be special. Defensively really competes with his length and lateral quickness. Tough guard that will fight through a screen and gets his hands on steals. Solid mid-major prospect.
PG Jimmy Sotos (Young Legends 17U)
The Conant guard has had a big spring and that continued this weekend in Minnesota. Sotos has a nice feel for the game in the half court being able to run his team and make reads finding shooters. Speaking of shooting Sotos is a lights out three point threat particularly off the catch. Consistent mechanics with elevation off the floor. Slick ball handler that has shown he can create off the dribble using screens as well just winning one on one to get in the lane for scores. This kid is tough as nails and really competes. Low majors need to jump all over him!
SG Marco Pettinato (Young Legends 17U)
Pettinato is coming off a monster junior campaign leading his team to the state title game and a magical run through the playoffs at Lincoln Way West. The tough and physical bodied wing plays with an all-out motor. He rebounds well for his position and competes on the defensive end despite his lack of elite athleticism moving well beating his man to the spot. His biggest asset is his perimeter shooting. Pettinato specializes as a spot up specialist from three with consistent form. Can get really hot from deep. Had a couple games where they weren’t falling at as high of rate as usual, but still shot it overall very well. Low-major prospect that would be really good at a D2.
SG Luke Anthony (Young Legends 17U)
Anthony was on fire from three throughout the weekend. The wing is a plus shooter from beyond the arc. He can be streaky at times, but when he is on it is lights out! Pure mechanics and a clean stroke. Moves well without the ball to both get open to set up his three, but also cutting to the basket away from the ball. Love his ability to be in the right spot at the right time ready to make a play. Anthony showed improved ability off the bounce handling the ball nicely on a couple drives. D2 prospect at this stage.
PF Peter Blust (Young Legends 17U)
Athletic and mobile post with size. Blust does a lot of the dirty work for his team getting loose balls and rebounds. Runs the floor tremendously well and can finish above the rim with ease. Floor spacer as well with his ability to knock down a jumper all the way out to three on occasion. Didn’t score a ton with his back to the basket. Blust will head off to prep school this year and should be looked at by low-major schools.
SF Jeameril Wilson (Young Legends 17U)
Wilson had his ups and downs throughout the weekend. Early in the event he wasn’t defending at a high level. That changed on championship Sunday when he locked down multiple opponents in all three of their games. The 6’5” small forward has size, strength, and athleticism. All which project well on that end of the floor. Rebounded at a high rate throughout the event on the defensive end. Offensively didn’t do a ton having a slash or transition score every now and then. Not a great perimeter shooter. Had a few mental mistakes which resulted in turnovers. Potential low-major prospect.
SF TJ Smith (Young Legends 17U)
Long and lanky 6’6” small forward. Defended well with his length. Didn’t score a ton offensively beyond a transition bucket every now and then. Needs to be more assertive on that end of the floor. Still has low-major upside for sure.
SG Craig Beaudion (Illinois Icemen 17U)
It was a breakout weekend for Beaudion. He made the switch over from Meanstreets into a more prominent role as a scorer and he put on a show! The Whitney Young 2017 shooting guard scored at will throughout the event. He is a slender built wing that is slippery through traffic getting to the hoop and accelerating toward the rim. Hit several runners and mid-range jumpers. Range stretches out to three with ease. Great showing from the potential low-major prospect.
SG Carlos Hines (Illinois Icemen 17U)
Shooting guard that can really fill it up. Athletic and rangy frame with quality length. He was streaky from three, but definitely shows he has NBA range on his jumper pulling up from deep. Smooth scorer that flies down the court in transition and uses body control at the rim to convert. Like what he brings to the table defensively with his motor and in your face mentality. Potential D1 prospect.
PG Steven Ross (Illinois Icemen 17U)
Scoring combo guard that is best as a spot up shooter. The transfer to North Lawndale can let it fly with relative consistency when spotting up on the wings with his feet set. Flashed some ability off the bounce. Utility player that does a little bit of everything. Small college prospect.
PF Leonard Capels (Illinois Icemen 17U)
Didn’t know a lot about this 6’5” post coming into the spring, but he was impressive. Battles inside against taller and more athletic posts. Big bodied four man that can get on the offensive glass and even stretch the floor a little with a mid-range jumper. Small college prospect.
G Dwayne Rose (Team Rose 17U)
The star for the 17U Team Rose was this Crete Monee standout. Without Elijah Joiner this weekend it was Rose who had to carry the scoring load. He hit a couple pull up jumpers, but overall his shot wasn’t on as consistent as usual. Rose did however use his strength and ball handling ability to get in the lane where he scored around the rim. Likes the euro step finish. Tough to stop when he gets a head of steam going downhill. While not a dominant defender Rose did show the ability to get in passing lanes and start the break. Combo guard is a mid-major to low-major prospect.
PG Quinton Shields (Team Rose 17U)
Quick and shifty small guard that handles it well in traffic. Loves the pull up mid-range jump shot. Brooks lead guard is someone to track for small college programs.
SG Jordan Doss (Team Rose 17U)
Strong and athletic built shooting guard that shot it pretty well from three throughout the event especially off the catch. Mixed in a couple drives and and-1’s. Small college wing in 2017.
C Anthony Cameron (Team Rose 17U)
Cameron is one of the biggest dudes out there with his huge frame and big upper body. He did a solid job on the offensive glass with multiple put backs during the event. Puts his body on opponent boxing out strong. Offensively he is still pretty raw. When he gets deep post position and uses a power drop step to finish he is most effective. Hands could improve catching passes inside. Low-major upside, but probably D2 at this stage.
PF Justin Brown (Team Rose 17U)
Was impressed with the Marist 6’7” four man. Long and lanky big that is mobile around the hoop. Flashed potential in the paint offensively with a nice hook shot and soft touch. Missed some shots due to lack of strength through bigger defenders. Once he gets stronger has potential to be a force. Sleeper low-major prospect that would be a really good D2 target at this stage.
PF Myles Cepha (Team Rose 17U)
The 6’6” four man lacks great height, but makes up for it with his length. Quality area rebounder that grabbed several offensive rebounds. Potential defensively as a shot blocker.
