A group of sharpshooters, Mavs Purple was able to jump out to a big lead early and kept a talented but undermanned Tri State Steam team at-bay for the entirety of the game. Tirique Randolph was stupendous for the Mavs, he’s a floor general who is certainly one of the better passers in the state. For Tri State it was a duo of playmakers; point guard Louis Psihoyos and wing Keith Johnson, who were both at times showstopping.
MVP: Tirique Randolph, 2017 PG, Davenport Central
It was the first time I’d seen the 6-foot-1 point guard play and he was very impressive. A big-bodied guard who can hit the long-ball and has elite court-vision and passing ability.

7:05 — Iowa Elite 16U 57 vs Hoffman Hoops Academy (KS) 41
This Iowa Elite squad has been one of the best in its age group for three years now and this year is no different. The addition of Cedar Rapids Washington point guard Hunter Strait is a great one, and he was the best player on the floor in this one. Sam Ingoli was great as usual, particularly with his toughness and outside shooting. This team is one of the favorites to win the 16U field.
MVP: Hunter Strait, 2018 PG, Cedar Rapids Washington
He was the best player I saw today, and that’s saying something in this loaded field. His savvy and feel for the game is off the charts, and his handles are as tight as anyone in the state. He looks like a legit D1 prospect.

8:10 — Martin Brothers 17U 43 vs Minnesota Warriors 56
It was just one of those games where the shots weren’t falling for this talented Martin Brothers squad. Their opponent was tough, but certainly not 13 points better then them. Sam Allen was impressive for Martin Brothers, and Johnston wing Dawson Jones looks to be one of 2017s most intriguing prospects.
MVP: Sam Allen, 6’3 SG, Grinnell
Nobody was particularly showstopping for Martin Brothers in this one, but Allen was one who stood out. His ability to put the ball on the floor and create for teammates is much-improved, and his shot is still one of the purest in the state.

9:15 — Quad City Soul 44 vs Pure Prep 17U 82
More of a 2016 squad than anyone else in this tournament, Pure Prep has three seniors — Y’Vez Quinn, Gatdoar Kueth, and Dontre English — playing with them this weekend. All are stars from the CIML, and all are top 35 players in the recently issued final 2016 rankings. Also added to the Pure Prep roster is Waukee big-man Jacob Rau — they will be a very tough out this weekend. Atticus Taylor was outstanding for QC Soul, he’s a 6’6 small forward who will be a star with Davenport North next season.
MVP: Dontre English, 6’1 G, Des Moines North
He just recently signed with Kansas JuCo Highland, but is still out here playing with the 17U squad. A warrior who is afraid of nothing on the floor, he was his usual bullish self and even came away with an impressive breakaway slam in the second half.
