In the football program he is a 6-foot-8, 260 pound tight end (although he doesn’t look near that heavy in the photos), in the basketball program a 6-foot-8 center, he’s been a soccer goal keeper, and he’s thrown shot put in track and field.
At 6-foot-8 you have to believe there is a college future there although right now Coach Greg Kjellsen said “I’m not sure what colleges are looking at him” but they are looking. And likely for a couple different sports.
“He really matured as a player and a person,” said Coach Kjellsen after a 13-9 winter of basketball. “He was a defensive presence on the floor. He could make up for a lot of mistakes we made defensively.”
That’s the luxury of a 6-foot-8 big inside who understands athletics. His size and understanding to play several sports successfully means somebody will likely look at him at the college level. What does Hunter have to do to prepare for that?
“His biggest growth this year was maturity,” the coach said. “If he wants to play at the college level he needs to get stronger and in better physical shape.”
Right now Lerew isn’t listed on a roster at all so this spring he’s unwinding after a hectic year playing three sports already. What’s next? That’s for Hunter to figure out but the guess is he will have options.
