The annual event routinely showcases the area’s top seniors and 2016 was no different with headliners including Helen Cox’s Roydell Brown, McDonogh 35’s De’Jon Jarreau and his former and future teammate, Brison Gresham.
All three took turns showcasing their abilities that made them Division I signees at Louisiana-Lafayette and UMASS, respectively but Brown ultimately helped Jefferson Parish to a 104-99 win scoring 21 points with a few big dunks.
The 6-foot-5 wing also showed off his improved ball handling and won the dunk contest after leaping over Karr duo Tyree Thompson and Devin Edinburgh. Brown beat out West Jefferson’s Ray Anderson for the dunking title but Anderson was every bit as instrumental as Brown in helping Jefferson Parish to the win.
The 6-foot-4 wing finished with a game-high 23 points and also rose above the rim on several occasions for some big flushes. Anderson’s high school teammate Kyle Pollar also added 14 points, 10 of which came in the second half with a pair of shots from deep.
L.W. Higgins’ Nathan Bailey also had a strong outing scoring 15 while showing off his smooth jumper with a good handle and the length and athleticism colleges are looking for as a 6-foot-4 wing player. Curtis guard Shawn Anderson was the team’s third-leading scorer with 19 knocking down a few contested jumpers with one 3-pointer.
Jarreau and Gresham were the main attractions for Orleans scoring 20 and 18 points, respectively. Jarreau repeatedly got into the paint finishing through contact and creating for teammates while Gresham, a former Roneagle who played his senior season at Notre Dame Prep in New Jersey, controlled the paint on both ends and stepped outside for a couple of jumpers as well.
Karr trio Vincent Phillips (13), Devin Edinburgh (9) and Tyree Thompson (6) combined for 28 points but Phillips was limited with a wrist injury on his shooting hand and even made one of his free throws left-handed. Edinburgh cleaned up the glass a few times for put-backs and Thompson dished out a handful of flashy passes, which has become the norm for the Northwestern State commit.
Holy Cross guard Xavian McKay also chipped in with eight points for Orleans nailing a few jumpers when the opportunity presented itself. Here’s a look at the highlights from Sunday’s game:
