It was close call between Pemsl and fellow Hawkeye-commit Jordan Bohannon, but ultimately we consider the big-man’s overall season to be a touch better. His 64 percent field goal percentage was very impressive, and his double-double average of 21.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game certainly made the difference. His performances during a runner-up finish at the state tournament last month — where he showed elite vision and athleticism — were deciding factors as well.
First Team
Jordan Bohannon, 6′ G, Linn Mar — He is 2016’s Iowa Mr. Basketball, and was a pinch away from being our Senior of the Year. The Hawkeye-commit was a scoring machine, averaging a 4A best 25.8 points per game, and was an elite shooter, connecting on 92 3s at a 43 percent clip.
Cordell Pemsl, 6’8 F, Dubuque, Wahlert — He was completely healthy for the first time in awhile, and he gave Hawkeye fans glimpses of what they should be excited about. He’s not necessarily big — especially bu Big Ten standards — but could become a very effective stretch four with his top-notch vision and passing.
Granger Kingland, 6’4 SG, Lake Mills — Kingland led the state in scoring, raining in 27.3 per game. He’s a sharpshooter who connected on 44 percent of his outside shots. He led his team in steals and blocks. And for good measure, he pulled down 9.4 boards per game.
Spencer Brown, 6’8 C, Lenox — We’re just going to put his season averages here; 22.8 points (67 FG%), 19.9 rebounds, 5.2 blocks — just ridiculous. Maybe the UNI football commit should look into paying some hoops in Cedar Falls too.
Turner Scott, 5’9 PG, Valley — Mr Clutch’s stats won’t jump out at you like some other guys on the list, but he was a strikingly precise shooter, connecting on 53 percent of his 3s and shooting 60 percent from the floor. That’s an amazing shooting percentage for a guard. Willing his team to a 4A title helped land him on the first team too.
Second Team
Jackson Lamb, 6’4 G, Nodaway Valley
Jaylan White, 5’9 PG, I-35
Will Carius, 6’6 SF, Pleasant Valley
Ryan Kriener, 6’9 PF, Spirit Lake
Ryan Hawkins, 6’7 SF, Atlantic
Third Team
Jake Kluender, 6’6 SF, Spencer
Connor Sonius, 5’11 PG, West Hancock
Tra’Von Fagan, 6’7 F, Cedar Falls
Connor Murrell, 6’4 SG, Sioux City East
Josh VanLingen, 6’8 PF, Western Christian
Fourth Team
Wali Parks, 6’5 F, Iowa City West
Deandre Burnside, 6′ PG, Bishop Heelan
