Class 4A Player of the Year: DeJon Jarreau
DeJon Jarreau has made tremendous strides each season and that has led to being named this years Class 4A Player of the Year. After a run to the quarterfinals was cut short against the eventual state runner-ups in Washington-Marion, he’ll turn his focus to UMass.
The big guard who can play either guard spot at 6’5 has made a name for himself with his elite level quickness and ability to finish well above the rim. In that highlight video above you’ll see some incredible plays including on earlier this year that only a handful of high school athletes are capable of. Last season he was named to the LSWA first team for Class 4A all-state and there is little doubt he’ll repeat those honors there.
UMass is coming off a 14-18 season where they lose two of their top three guards to graduation and that void will need to be filled quickly. Jarreau’s athleticism and length will allow him to play on or off the ball and give the Minutemen some real minutes (no pun intended). He’ll be joined by close friend and former teammate both at McDonogh 35 and in the EYBL with Elfrid Payton Elite in big man Brison Gresham.
There is little doubt that Jarreau is one of the best players in Louisiana and despite his teams earlier than they would have liked exit from the playoffs, he still was dominant enough to take this award home. Again, take a look at the highlight tape above and you’ll see why so many other programs like Miami and Oklahoma were interested in the long, quick guard.
