FIRST TEAM
Player of the Year: Joe Smoldt, Gladbrook-Reinbeck (2017)
Stats: 25.3 points, 4.8 assists, 2.9 steals, 51.2 FG%, 42.8 3P%, 84.7 FT%
Smoldt carried a team that had lost a bunch of pieces back to the state tournament, putting up huge numbers with eye-popping efficiency along the way. His strong play continued in Des Moines, where he was named captain of the all-tournament team for the second straight season. A remarkable shooter with a great ability to shoot the ball off the dribble, Smoldt is in line for a big summer with the Iowa Barnstormers.
Spencer Brown, Lenox (2016)
Stats: 22.8 points, 19.9 rebounds, 5.2 blocks, 67.3 FG%
Brown posted the most ridiculous stat line we’ve seen in our two-plus years in a four-overtime loss to Stanton late in the regular season, when he scored 42 points and grabbed 41 rebounds. Those numbers were outrageous, but far from unusual for the Northern Iowa football commit big man. He averaged a 20-20 stat line, in addition to blocking five shots a night. He was truly dominant in the paint all season.
Connor Sonius, West Hancock (2016)
Stats: 20.5 points, 7.8 rebounds, 8.2 assists, 3.1 steals, 45.5 FG%, 43.6 3P%, 81.6 FT%
The most consistent threat to post a triple-double on any given night, Sonius led the class in assists and helped lead his team back to the state tournament. A versatile point guard with the ability to score at all three levels, he proved to be just as capable (and willing) to set up his teammates, and he rebounds at a high-level for a guard. He’s posted video game numbers for years and has certainly earned his spot as an all-stater.
Jackson Lamb, Nodaway Valley (2016)
Stats: 26.5 points, 9.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 3.0 steals, 48.0 FG%, 37.0 3P%, 77.7 FT%
The high scoring wing returned earlier than expected from an injury he suffered during football season, playing the entire season for the Wolverines after an early prognosis said he may be out until January. He’s been one of the state’s top scorers for years now, with the ability to score from anywhere on the floor, and he stuffed the stat sheet across the board.
Damon Struve, South O’Brien (2016)
Stats: 18.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 4.6 steals, 47.2 FG%
The school’s career leader in a number of categories, Struve led the 1A champion Wolverines in every major category this season. His all-around offensive abilities were showcased with his efficient shooting and a 2.5-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. He also paced a dominant defensive group that carried South O’Brien to the title, snatching 4.6 steals a game at the top of their 2-3 zone.
SECOND TEAM
Ethan Wyant, Jesup (2017)
Stats: 18.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 62.8 FG%, 77.9 FT%
Wyant helped carry a Jesup team that lost arguably their best player, Kyle Schultz, in the opening seconds of their first game. The J-Hawks made it to state behind the strong play of their point guard, who shot an astounding 62.8% from the floor despite being listed at 5’11”. He showcased his ability to take over a game in the first half of their quarterfinal loss to Gladbrook-Reinbeck, and will be one of the top players in 1A next season with his smooth mid-range game and ability to shoot off the dribble.
Andy Geelan, Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire (2016)
Stats: 17.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 2.2 blocks, 57.9 FG%, 70.9 FT%
The lead guard for the Titans led G-T/R-A in nearly every category, and was a constant threat to put up a triple-double. With his size (6’5″), he has the ability to see over the defense and make plays for both himself and his teammates. He ranked fifth in the class in assists.
Kyle Wagner, IKM-Manning (2016)
Stats: 22.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 47.2 FG%, 37.3 3P%, 72.1 FT%
Wagner helped lead his IKM team back to the state tournament with his 22.5 points per game, which ranked ninth in the class. The 6’4″ wing has a versatile offensive game, which he’ll be taking to Morningside.
Peyton Pedersen, Central Decatur (2016)
Stats: 23.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 48.9 FG%
The sixth leading scorer in the class, Pedersen completed a stellar high school career with his most successful season, leading the Cardinals in both scoring and rebounding.
Jake Hilmer, North Linn (2019)
Stats: 16.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 8.9 assists, 3.2 assist-to-turnover ratio, 4.4 steals, 47.7 FG%, 36.9 3P%, 80.3 FT%
The lone freshmen to be named to our all-state teams in 1A, Hilmer was sensational in his debut campaign with the Lynx. He ranked third in the class in assists and posted an eye-popping 3.2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. He also proved to be a menace on the defensive end, snatching over four steals a game, which certainly helped contribute to his efficiency on the offensive end. Opposing 1A coaches will have to account for this stud guard for another three years.
THIRD TEAM
Christian Reischauer, Colo-Nesco (2016)
Stats: 16.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 2.7 steals, 55.6 FG%
Reischauer was arguably the best player for a very good Colo-Nesco team that fell just short of their state tournament goal. He’s an efficient offensive player who can also stuff the stat sheet across the board. He’s capable of taking over games on either end of the floor and can make plays for his teammates.
Jacob Kuhlmeier, West Fork (2016)
Stats: 15.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 71.7 FG%, 70.5 FT%
The leading scorer for 1A’s final undefeated team, Kuhlmeier shot a ridiculous 71.7% from the floor, proving to be a force on the interior for the Warhawks. The 6’5″ post stuck to his strengths as well, taking only two of his 219 shots from behind the arc.
Dalton Moser, Boyden-Hull (2016)
Stats: 18.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, 50.3 FG%, 42.8 3P%, 77.1 FT%
Moser put up some very solid efficiency numbers from everywhere for a Boyden-Hull team that was considered one of the favorites in the class throughout the season. A quality scoring guard who is capable of scoring from anywhere on the floor.
Jovonte Squiers, Lone Tree (2017)
Stats: 16.2 points, 4.3 rebounds, 7.9 assists, 4.0 steals, 51.9 FG%, 38.5 3P%, 78.1 FT%
Squiers led the Lions in scoring, steals and assists while shooting well above 50% from the floor. The dynamic lead guard ranked fourth in the class in assists, posting a solid 2.4-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. He also proved to be a force on the defensive end, swiping four steals a night. He’s quick and has complete control of the game with the ball in his hands.
Riley Van Wyhe, Central Lyon (2017)
Stats: 17.4 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 59.5 FG%
The leading scorer for one of 1A’s best teams, Van Wyhe was highly efficient from the floor throughout the season.
