The sophomore big man was very strong all week for the runner-up Falcons, averaging 12.7 points and leading the field in rebounding, averaging 8.7 per game. He was particularly dominant in CBSA’s quarterfinal blowout of top-seeded Danville, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds as the Falcons made themselves known as a real threat.
Connor Sonius, West Hancock (2016)
Arguably the state’s most consistent threat to put up a triple-double throughout the course of the last two seasons, Sonius showed why with his play in Des Moines, averaging 20.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 7.0 assists during the week.
Damon Struve, South O’Brien (2016)
The leading scorer for 1A’s champion Wolverines, Struve averaged 14.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game throughout the week and paced a staunch defense that allowed just 43.7 points per game. A force at the top of their 2-3 defense, he picked up 2.3 steals per game during the week.
Travis Miller, Council Bluffs, St. Albert (2016)
The sharpshooter showed the ability to torch the nets from the perimeter, pouring in 12 3-pointers during the week, including five each in the Falcons’ semifinals and championship games. He proved to be far from a one trick pony, however, averaged 5.3 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game as well.
Joe Smoldt, Gladbrook-Reinbeck (2017)
Smoldt dazzled all week in Des Moines, most notably with a 27-point second half in the Rebels quarterfinal win over Jesup. He ended up scoring 35 in the game, and averaged 29 points a game in Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s three games. The junior guard was named the captain of the 1A all-tournament team for the second straight year and once again showed that he is the top player in 1A.
