Mike Smith to Columbia
The top available 2016 point guard in the state has made his college decision. Fenwick senior point guard Mike Smith has committed to play his college basketball at Columbia. He told us why they were his choice.
“It’s an opportunity of a lifetime. Not only do I get a premier education I get to go somewhere like Fenwick all over again where basketball is on the rise and I can help put it on the map. From the head coach all the way down to the grad assistant I felt like I was wanted and I felt like with these coaches we can make history. I just feel like the Ivy League is becoming a much better conference and I want to be a part of that. When I visited it felt like I was at home and it was the best place for me. That’s why I chose Columbia over the other schools.”
The floor general excels in the pick and roll game where he makes sound decisions and takes good angles. He can knock down a shot and also get to the rim with quick acceleration. Smith uses hesitation effectively to keep his defenders off balance and create space. The senior has great speed in transition blowing by defenders. He has a knack for converting tough athletic finishes at the rim. Defensively his pressure on ball defense causes turnovers and gets the opposition out of sync.
He followed up a strong showing with Team Rose last summer with a stellar senior campaign! Smith is one of the state’s top 10 2016 prospects and the #3 point guard in his class.
