Mequon, WI — Prep Hoops Illinois was back at Homestead High School for another action packed day od NY2LA Summer Jam. Bracket play began and it was win or go home Saturday. We take a look at some of the standout performances from Saturday’s opening games here in Summer Jam: Derrick’s Saturday Dimes part 1
Standouts
F- 6’8’’ 2019 Chris Payton – Meanstreets EYBL
Chris Payton came off the bench Saturday and scored 16 points to lead Meanstreets to a win over Illinois Stars. The #5 prospect in 2019 for Illinois was very active in the paint in the second half. Payton scored off of several offensive rebound put backs including a tip dunk that were key down the stretch to secure the win for Meanstreets. Payton controlled the glass on the defensive end and had a couple block shots as well.
G/F 6’9’’ 2021 Pat Baldwin Jr. – Phenom University EYBL
The highly touted 2021 G/F Pat Baldwin Jr. is one of the top overall prospects in his class and it was easy to see why Saturday. Baldwin showed off an ultra-smooth game and jump shot that looks effortless while playing up a class with 16U. Baldwin has a good overall skillset, and understands the game. Baldwin uses his length to his advantage and his versatility makes him a difficult match-up, you have to pick your poison because he can score from all three levels.
SF – 6’6’ 2019 Kahlil Whitney – Mac Irvin Fire EYBL
Kahlil Whitney was again impressive and continues to have a strong summer the 6’6’ wing out of Roselle Catholic in New Jersey did it all in a win over Kessel Heat where he scored 23 points. Whitney shot the ball well again draining three’s and hitting from mid-range as well. Whitney was constantly in attack mode leading the break where he got to the rim at ease for either points or getting to the lane. He also flashed improved court vision and made some crisp passes for assists out to his Fire teammates. His stock continues to rise as he recently picked up a big time offer from Kentucky. He has the talent to play anywhere in the country and if he continues to shoot it like this from deep he will be a nightmare matchup at the next level.
SG – 6’5’’ 2019 Shandon Clanton – IL Stars
The 6’5’’ SG out of Rockford East has caught the eyes of the Prep Hoops Illinois staff and impressed again Saturday in tough loss to the Meanstreets. Clanton is a long rangy wing that shot it well and showed he can create his own shot scoring in different ways both off the catch and off the dribble. Crafty in finding his spots and getting into the lane for some nice floaters. A prospect to keep tabs on and small colleges should give the wing out of Rockford a look.
PG – 5’9’’ 2019 Noah Woulard – Illinois Raptors
Another prospect that caught our eye for the first time was 2019 Plainfield East PG Noah Woulard. Who had a solid performance against Twin Cities Pirates. He started off slow but had a nice second half for the Raptors. Woulard showed a sound shot from the perimeter knocking down a three and some slick moves to the basket for scores.
