NY2LA Summer Jam Recap: Day 3
MEQUON — The stop standouts and stock boosters from day three of the NY2LA Sports Summer Jam…
TOP PERFORMERS
Patrick Baldwin Jr. – 2021 – SF – Phenom University
Arguably the No. 1 prospect in his class, Baldwin continues to have a big week. The touted forward shot the ball at a high clip on Friday and also did some special things in transition. The long, 6-foot-8 sophomore is so tough to stop in the open floor. His long strides cover ground quickly and he’s also coming into his body athletically, allowing Baldwin to change directions in space and explode the rim more efficiently. There’s been no doubt this week that Baldwin will eventually be a prospect that everyone in the country desires.
Reece Beekman – 2020 – PG – Phenom University
Love the way Beekman runs the show and dictates the tempo. There’s some big names on this Phenom University squad, but they follow his lead. Always making the correct decision with the basketball, Beekman can see the play before it happens. He’s got this unique sixth sense to react with the defense. A plus-length, pass-first guard, Beekman was terrific in the open floor. Beekman is more than capable of scoring the ball if needed. He’s raw physically, but can take hits around the rim. He’ll knock down open triples all day and tear defenses apart in the pick n’ roll. Having emerged as a high major prospect, Beekman is a solid pick up at the power-five level.
Kobe Johnson – 2020 – G – Phenom University
Somebody has been in the gym. Continuing to get better and better, Johnson showed off some tricks during Friday’s win over Made Men. Johnson had a few eye-opening moments, one in particular where he crossed over a defender at the top of the key, went between his legs, and hit nothing but net on a step-back triple. Johnson finished with a game-high 12 points in short work. Beginning to grow and catch up with his older brothers, Johnson looks like he’ll develop into a nice 6-4/6-5 point guard, if not bigger.
Max Klesmit – 2020 – SG – Wisconsin Blizzard
Wanted to see how Klesmit would do a fairly high-level matchup and the rising junior definitely held his own against G3 Grind Friday night. Klesmit scored in double figures against a backcourt that had some Division 1 talent. Very comfortable as a pull-up mid-range and 3-point shooter, Klesmit has been consistent throughout July. Klesmit was also able to get to the rim against some very quick guards as well. Looking like a strong candidate to be a scholarship player at the next level, Klesmit will be going up in our next class of 2020 rankings.
STOCK BOOSTERS
Braeden Brown – 2019 – SG – Ray Allen Select Donaldson
RAS Donaldson held their own and nearly knocked off Team BBC. Brown hit some tough shots along the way to keep his team alive for an upset bid. A 6-foot-2 shooting guard, Brown is more athletic than he looks. He’s got got good enough handles to create space off the bounce and certainly did so against one of the more athletic teams in the field. Brown averaged less than 4.0 points per game at Marquette last season, but should be expected for a much stronger senior season.
Eli Considine – 2019 – SF – Randolph Boys Club
We still feel like this is one of the better hidden gems in the state. A combo glue guy/playmaker, Considine just contributes in a variety of ways. He’s a terrific all-around athlete than can play in transition and above the rim. In the half court, Considine has blow-by ability and loves to drive and dish. A kid that just doesn’t stop moving on the floor, Considine is always looking to make hustle plays. The Portage standout would be a nice addition to a small school program. Even if he never plays a minute, Considine would surely make his teammates better and challenge them in daily in practice.
Isaac Lindsey – 2020 – SG – Phenom University
When you’re surrounded by as much talent as Lindsey is, his job might look simple — make the open shot. And to a large degree, Lindsey’s role isn’t as big as say Jalen Johnson or Reece Beekman. But to show up game in and game out and be consistent, reaching the bar raised by some of his high profile teammates, says something about Lindsey. The Mineral Point sniper has been not only steady, but shooting the 3-ball at a high clip this week and he’s done that since April. Lindsey could certainly be bigger, stronger, and more athletic, but unlike many of his breed, he’s rarely a liability defensively. When the 6-foot-4 junior checks into the game, the energy and effort on that end of the floor for Phenom University does not drop.
Keontae White – 2018 – SG – Milwaukee Spartans-Rebels
Back on the market, the former Milwaukee Hamilton standout made some big plays in a close win over the Chicago Demons. The electric guard just tore up the defense in transition — not only slicing and dicing his way to the rim, but setting up teammates for some beautiful lobs as well. A terrific isolation scorer, White makes defenders cringe when they have to check him 1-on-1. White was originally slated to attend junior college, but is now looking for a new home next season.
