Prospect Spotlight: Connor Becker (2021)
Last weekend in Milwaukee, Maquoketa and Iowa Mavericks guard Connor Becker had some eye-opening performances.
It’s his ability to score the ball at the rim or from deep, paired with his defensive tenacity, that makes the 6-foot-guard a standout.
“I really like defense, I’m a really big defensive guy. I like to contribute on offense, too. My shot is — when I get going — it’s hard to stop when I heat up. I like driving to the hoop and I’ve got a nice mid-range game,” said Becker.
As a freshman with the Cardinals, Becker contributed plenty. He averaged 5.8 points and a steal per game off the bench. He’s looking forward to playing better and having an increased role this coming season.
“My shooting percentages from last year were not at all where I wanted them to be. And my scoring should bump up quite a bit next year with my high school team,” said Becker.
“Last year, I was more of a role player that would come off the bench and maybe hit a couple 3s and play some solid defense on one of the team’s best players. This year, I’m hoping to score quite a bit more and just continue and play really good defense.”
Ahead of his sophomore season, Becker will be spending his summer with the Iowa Mavericks’ top 15U squad.
“It’s been really fun playing with Iowa Mavericks. I’m more of a scorer on that team and I like to play with the kids from different places,” he said. “Every tourney we go to we always compete. I like to play D and score with that team, everything just kind of flows.”
They’ll be in Milwaukee this weekend and in Las Vegas next weekend, and Becker says it’s his defense that might differentiate himself from his peers.
“In AAU, everyone is a scorer so I really try and key in on my defense and show them I can lock anyone down. I just like to show off my defense,” said Becker.
And with the last two weekends of July being live period events, there will be plenty of college coaches around looking for their next batch of possible recruits.
“It’d be a great opportunity if a college coach were to see me over these next couple of weekends,” said Becker. “That’d be pretty cool.”
