Francisco’s Finest: Pangos Premier 80 Showcase (Stock Raisers)
LYNWOOD, CA—There were two major positives while arriving at Firebaugh High School Gymnasium—air conditioning and a bevy of talent. Dinos Trigonis continues to attract the best of the best around the country and it that will probably be the case at the FAB 48 in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks. The prospects ranged from 2022 standout Amari Bailey to 2020 stud Mady Sissoko—as well as a plethora of Division 1 prospects in between.
Quincy McGriff (Santa Monica)
2020, WF, 6-foot-4, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: McGriff has been on a terror since June and it hasn’t slowed down thus far in July. He can score in bunches due to his improved jump shot as well as his relentless motor. He blitzes up the court and weaves his way through the defense and uses his strength and skill to finish over and through the defense. McGriff is one of the better overall scorers in his class in Southern California.
Kevin Bethel (Westchester)
2019, CG, 6-foot-1, 160 pounds
Joel’s Take: The Comets under Ed Azzam have produced a plethora of guards under his tenure—and he appears to have another one in Bethel. Bethel is a late-blooming combo-guard with long arms, good quickness, and an improved skill set. Playing alongside Division 1 prospect Jordan Brinson and Jeremiah Turly, Bethel received limited touches. However, once Brinson went down with an injury, Bethel took off—and he appears to be trending upward.
L Simpson (Sierra Canyon)
2019, SG, 6-foot-2, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: Simpson has always been a glue-type who impacts the game with his defensive prowess, strength, and ability to finish through contact. He picks up his opponent full court and he suffocates them with his active hands, lateral quickness, and a relentless mindset. However, at this event he knocked in some open jump shots and showed an improved scorinig package.
Austin Cook (Damien)
2020, WF, 6-foot-5, 195 pounds
Joel’s Take: The Spartan wing-type has always been known for his sniper-like jump shot. His jump shot was clicking as usual, but he also showed some exceptional passing and rebounding. Overall, his IQ trumps his peers with his ability to read defenses.
Justin Williams (JSerra)
2020, PG, 6-foot-2, 165 pounds
Joel’s Take: Williams is one of the better under-the-radar prospects in So-Cal. He has recently transferred from Anaheim Canyon to JSerra and will team with fellow junior Ian Martinez to form an exceptional young backcourt. Williams has ideal length and quickness for the D1 level and his scoring skill set is evolving. He can nail the 3-point shot or slash his way to the rim and he possesses the vision to find open teammates.
Joe Octave (Mary Star)
2019, SG, 6-foot-3, 185 pounds
Joel’s Take: This kid is a born scorer, inside and out. He utilizes his thick strong frame to bully his way to the rim and he can finish through contact. Out on the perimeter he can stroke the 3-point shot and has a knack of finding ways to score at all three levels. He isn’t overly explosive, but he does possess a solid 1st step and knows how to attack the seams of the defense.
