What makes 2019 shooting guard Julius Dixon great?
A shooting guard has to have the ability to shoot, dribble, and see the court like a point guard. It would also help if a shooting guard can be a team’s point guard at times. Well, 2019 shooting guard Julius Dixon is a special shooting guard, with the ability to shoot from long range to go along with his high basketball IQ.
Those are only two things that describes how great of a shooting guard Dixon is heading into his senior year of high school at Fayetteville. He has goals of averaging a double-double, winning the state title, winning district MVP, and becoming a Mr. Basketball finalist.
Here are three things that makes Dixon such a talent at shooting guard:
He’s always in the gym.
When Dixon has free time, he’s in the gym shooting one jumper after another. He’s running up and down the court dribbling the basketball, looking straight ahead as if a defender is in his presence. Dixon doesn’t waste his time, and has the mindset of perfecting his craft. His work ethic makes him one of the top shooting guards in the 2019 class. His father, Kevin Dixon, agrees.
“He works pretty hard. He gets a lot of shots up each day in the gym,” he said. “He has good morals and good technique.”
He’s patient.
Dixon doesn’t like to rush a shot up. He prefers to allow the game to come to him. Dixon is an unselfish shooting guard, willing to find the open man instead of forcing up a shot that wasn’t a good look to begin with. With his scoring ability, Dixon can easily average between 20-25 points a game, but chooses to be a better teammate.
“There are sometimes in the game I will rush my shot, and try to rush to make a good play,” Dixon said. “But, most of the time, I try to take my time.”
He’s not settling.
Dixon is solid at the high school level, but realizes his game will need to improve if he wants to have success at the college level. He has been working on his ball handling and defensive tactics since his junior season ended. Dixon likes to watch James Harden for offense and Dwyane Wade and Kawhi Leonard for their scoring and defensive tenacity. He wants to become a two-way player like Wade and Leonard and find other ways to score.
