Prospect Update: Karson Sharar (2021)
Recently, Iowa Falls-Alden guard Karson Sharar became the first class of 2021 guy in Iowa to nab a Division I offer.
The staff from Drake had been keeping its eye on the the 6-foot guard for a little while, and pulled the trigger last Sunday after seeing Sharar in Milwaukee at the Next Level Invitational.
Earlier this month, Sharar and his All Iowa Attack 15U squad played well in a Council Bluffs tourney and advanced to play OSA Elite in the title game. As he routinely has been doing this offseason, Sharar played well in that game. Shortly after, a representative from the Drake staff contacted his AAU coach Lefty Moore.
Then, last weekend at a live period tourney in Milwaukee, Drake was in attendance to watch Sharar. They offered shortly after.
“They were in Milwaukee a couple days, Thursday and Friday I saw them at my games. And then on Sunday they called and offered,” said Sharar.
“It’s a pretty cool college, and I told them I’d go on a visit pretty soon and see what it’s all about. And get to know them a little more.”
Sharar has been on our radar for awhile now. He was named Prep Hoops Iowa’s Freshman of the Year last winter after averaging 20.8 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.
And a scary thought for Iowa high school hoops opponents: he’s working hard to get better.
“I’ve been improving a lot offensively, like shooting, I’ve gotten a lot better at that. And getting involved with my teammates, we’ve been playing really well together the last few tournaments,” said Sharar.
“On the defensive side, I’m getting better at on-ball defense and rebounding and things like that.”
Already an established superstar with the Cadets, Sharar hopes to duplicate his individual success next season, while improving team success.
“My freshman season was a good experience, I was the main scorer and I had to do a lot of things for my team,” said Sharar. “This offseason, we’ve been getting a lot better and getting in the gym and improving. I’m looking forward to my sophomore year because I think we’ll be a lot better than last year.”
But first, he’s got two big weekends left with one of the Midwest’s best AAU teams, All Iowa Attack 15U. Sharar and his squad will be in Wichita this weekend at the Mullins Invite. They’ll be in Lawrence, Kansas the following weekend at the Hardwood Classic.
“This spring and summer has gone really well for us, I’m learning a lot playing really good competition,” said Sharar. “I’ve been improving a lot, and I’m looking forward to the next two tournaments to keep improving.”
