Prospect Profile: Dominic McGarvey (2019 Sheldon HS/Team Flight)
The month of July has started off with a bang for Dominic McGarvey. At the Double Pump Summer Tip-Off in Anaheim, the talented 6-foot-9, 205-pound post from Sheldon High School was getting things done on both ends of the floor, shutting things down defensively in the paint while also running the floor and scoring in multiple ways. His play helped Team Flight capture the 17U Gold Division championship, and McGarvey is hoping that it elevates his college recruitment.
“It started off a little slow but by the third game we were playing well,” McGarvey said of Team Flight’s tournament run. “I was starting to play well and I was blocking a lot of shots. Offensively I did well too, I was getting down low and doing my thing. I was hitting some mid-range shots too. I felt like no one could stop me.”
Team Flight’s run gave McGarvey the opportunity to play in front of college coaches the entire tournament. There he certainly made an impact on the defensive end, but showed that he’s a skilled big man who can run the floor and finish at the rim. While he’s hopeful to get more feedback from coaches, so far things are slowly developing with his college recruitment. He notes that he’s been hearing from mostly Division II and Division III schools so far, but has heard some from Washington State and is hopeful that he’ll hear more.
“My ultimate goal is Division I as I know that I can do that,” McGarvey said. “I want to go somewhere on the West Coast at a big school where I can meet a lot of people. I also want a place where they get into (basketball). I want to get into the gym and get to work.”
McGarvey notes that he’s continuing to work on his outside shooting and ball-handling. Team Flight will next play this week in Las Vegas. McGarvey current ranks as the #14 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
