GASO WICHITA: Top Youngsters (Forwards)
The Great American Shootout Midwest wrapped up play on Sunday at Wichita Hoops Facility in Bel Aire, Kan. with several standout performances taking place in the final stages of bracket play.
Here, Prep Hoops Kansas takes a look at several of the top young forwards from Kansas who stood out throughout the weekend.
1 — Trey Moala, 6’4, 2022, F, 2022, Paola, KC Team Rush 14U (pictured)
Moala brings activity and toughness to the baseline where he is a terrific defensive rebounder as he shows a willingness to pursue the ball off the glass and battle for the ball. He has long arms, a long reach and has some quickness. Offensively, Moala makes himself available along the baseline and finishes tough chances around the basket and can also handle the ball some on the perimeter.
0 — Drew Nicholson, 6’4, F, 2021, Holsington, Kansas Kings
Nicholson is a skilled wing player with long arms and a lean, rangy frame. He needs to get stronger, but he shows a well-rounded offensive game with a lot of upside. He can shoot the 3 with range, put it on the floor and attack the basket and even has a nice pull-up game from the mid-range. Despite a thin build, his team needs him to compete in the paint and he showed throughout the weekend the ability to get on the defensive boards and battle bigger, stronger players inside.
31 — Cory Powell Jr., 6’3, G/F, 2021, Highland Park, SSA Elite 15U Black
Powell got some run as a freshman last year at Highland Park and showed this weekend he is ready to take on an even bigger role for the Scots next year and beyond. He is a wing player with good size and a big frame and the skill set to handle the ball and play on the perimeter as well as the willingness to take his game to the paint or even post up when needed.
20 — Colin Schreiber, 6’3, F, 2021, Salina South, NLHA 15U
Schreiber was at his best attacking the basket throughout the weekend where he showed the ability to elevate in traffic and finish tough chances. He has some skills on the perimeter as well as he can handle the ball a little and can even shoot from behind the 3-point arc as well.
44 — Charles Snyder, 6’3, F, 2021, Emporia, SSA Elite 15U Black
Snyder is a terrific inside-out forward who plays much bigger than his listed 6’3 height. He has an old school post game and shows terrific footwork on the block for a young player, yet he can also step away from the basket and shoot a little, handle the ball and has a good feel for passing. He got several baskets in transition throughout the weekend as he finishes well on the move and is willing to run the floor.
