Prospect Spotlight: Anthony Hunter (2020)
Durango and Las Vegas Knicks rising junior Anthony Hunter has been having one heck of a spring, and he’s got the Division I offers to show for it.
Five schools have offered Hunter so far; Southern Miss, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Northridge, Tulane and Long Beach State.
The 6-foot point guard says it’s his ability to play both sides of that ball that makes him a dynamic threat on the floor.
“The main thing I do is just push the ball and play defense full court, and I like to run the pick and roll offense — those are the three best things I do right now,” said Hunter.
At Durango last season, Hunter was tremendous. Next season, he’ll look to again be prolific and add some leadership to the mix, too.
“Junior season was good, I averaged around 24 points and four assists,” said Hunter. “This next year I’ll be an upperclassmen, and the high man, so I’ll need to up my leadership.”
But first, he’s got a big summer ahead playing up a grade level with Las Vegas Knicks 17U. They’re currently in New York competing in the adidas Gauntlet Finale.
“My spring was definitely good. I played up last year and played well, and this season I’m playing up again with the 17s. But since the spring I think game’s gotten way better,” said Hunter.
As for the five scholarship offers he’s gotten in the past year-plus, he says he’s grateful to be noticed in a crowded bunch of talented guards.
“It’s been a blessing, with my class in Vegas it’s just really stacked, so for people to recognize me and see me as one of the top prospects in Vegas, it’s cool,” said Hunter.
Now, the goal is to win some tournaments with the Knicks. And show college coaches that he can be a two-way standout.
“My biggest goal is that I really want to win the Gauntlet Finale in New York. And then just show people how I improved in June, with a better body and better conditioned,” said Hunter. “And I want to prove that I can play both sides of the ball at a high level.”
