Live Period Breakout Candidates (Part II)
As the weather in Iowa reaches a boil in July, so does offseason recruitment. Three straight live period weekends occur during the latter half of the month, and that means college coaches will be ubiquitous. Below, we’ll take a look at eight guys who we feel are may be in line for some scholarship offers by month’s end.
Cortaviaus Seales, 6′ PG (Iowa Mavericks 17U)
He was electrifying at the Kings of the Court in May and if he’s not already warranting some Division II interest, he should be. He’s got a tight handle and is able to take over a game single-handedly,
Carter Duwa, 5’10 PG (Iowa Prep 17U)
In late May, Duwa reported having interest come in from several D2, D3 and NAIA schools. His dad is a coach at D3 Augustana in Illinois, but the highly skilled point guard’s recruitment is still wide open.
Derek Emilfeonewu, 6’3 G (Kingdom Hoops-Mosley 17U)
He had a huge spring with Kingdom Hoops, and we had several coaches, mostly D2, asking about him. Now, he heads into the summer with a mission to nab a D1 offer. He’s also expressed interest in prep school.
Will Berg, 6’8 PF (Barnstormers 16U)
A top-5 guy in Iowa’s 2020 class, Berg is a guy that could soon be reporting scholarship offers. He’s big, skilled and versatile, and should have a breakout junior season with one of the state’s best teams next season, Valley.
Braxton Bayless, 6′ (All Iowa Attack 16U)
He’s still yet to fully burst onto the scene, but by this time next year the Ankeny Hawks point guard could be one of the hottest recruits in Iowa. He’s already had a big spring with Attack, and that should continue through July.
Jake Schockemoehl, 6’2 G (Pure Prep 16U)
He’s having a great offseason with Pure Prep, and that really comes as no surprise to us. Each time we’ve seen the smooth lead guard play in the past, he’s been one of the best players on the floor. We also won’t be surprised if his recruitment picks up considerably over the next month.
Chase Courbat, 6’8 PF (Martin Brothers 15U)
Just a rising sophomore, the Cedar Falls big-man will almost certainly be a top-5 prospect when Iowa’s Class of 2021 rankings are released in the fall. He’s big, and has a striking frame. Courbat looks the part of a D1-caliber hoopster, and he could start receiving some serious interest soon.
Payton Sandfort, 6’4 SG (Kingdom Hoops 15U)
Another guys who’s young, but oh so talented. Sandfort could start to see some recruitment came his way despite being just a rising sophomore. His height and ability to shoot the rock will be impossible for observing college coaches to ignore.
