First July Live Evaluation Period: Class of 2019 Prospects to Watch (#10 – #6)
The first live evaluation period in July begins this week and members of the Class of 2019 in the state of Oregon are hoping to make major impressions on the college coaches that will be watching them play. Where do the current PrepHoops Oregon’s Top Ten rising seniors stand with the recruiting process going into this critical month? We start by taking a look at the players ranked number #10 through #6.
#10: Drayton Caoile (2019 West Linn HS/Hoop Salem) – Caoile has been steady with his play with Hoop Salem, filling in at both guard spots while consistently hitting open shots. With “Skinny” (Jaden Nielsen-Skinner) off to play with Seattle Rotary this first week in July, Caoile will get a chance to showcase his skills at the point a little more than in the spring. He notes that Chaminade – which has also visited him at school – and Washington State have made plans to watch him play in July, and other schools such as St. Martin’s and Seattle Pacific have been in contact with either his coaches or his father.
#9: RJ Veliz (2019 Blanchet Catholic HS/Hoop Salem) – Veliz continues to garner interest from colleges at all levels and is coming off a good month of June where he attended several elite camps and did well showing ability to score and run a team. Also a stellar student, he continues to hear from the likes of Portland, Seattle, Idaho, Western Oregon, Point Loma, Chaminade, Carroll and Whitman among others but is still waiting for his first scholarship offer. He’s hoping his play in July will merit some, starting with the NorCal Summer Tip-Off in Oakland this weekend.
#8: Brian Warinner (2019 Bend HS/Hoop Salem) – Schools from the D-II, D-III, and NAIA levels continue to monitor Warinner – according to him he’s been in contact with Point Loma Nazarene, Whitman, George Fox, Emory University, and Lewis Clark State – but can his combination of size and skill merit a scholarship offer and possibly interest from larger programs such as Idaho (which has also shown interest)? As we have seen in the past, it just takes a few great performances to catch the eye of a college coach and Warinner has a chance to do that this month. This week, Hoop Salem will start at the NorCal Summer Tip-Off in Oakland.
#7: Josh Angle (2019 Lake Oswego HS/Rose City Rebels) – Angle made the switch to the Rebels mid-spring and will be running with them in July. On the court, his reputation is rock-solid as a knock-down shooter. Off the court, his academic record is golden too. Angle notes that Columbia, Princeton, and Cornell will all be watching him this month, starting with the Peach Jam Invitational this week, and Columbia head coach Jim Engles will specifically be in attendance. Will his play merit an offer from one of these programs?
#6: Ty Rankin (2019 Grant HS/Rose City Rebels) – The spring was one of adjustment for Rankin has he had to settle into a different role with the Rebels, more of a supporting one than what he has played with Grant. Since the spring, he has continued to work on his shooting from three-point range and will be set on making an impression on college coaches this month, starting with the Peach Jam Invitational this week. Grant head coach Robert Key notes that Montana and Utah State are among the schools showing interest.
