Prospect Profile: Zach Galvin (2019 Southridge HS/Team Fly North)
The spring was an interesting time for Zach Galvin. The solid 6-foot-4, 180-pound wing was originally moving down to California, but as it turns out he’s back this summer in Beaverton. So after playing a little bit of AAU basketball for a team in Northern California, he rejoined his Southridge High School teammates for June and is set on joining Team Fly North for the viewing periods in July.
For Southridge in summer ball, Galvin has played his brand of basketball, knocking down shots from the perimeter and hustling hard on defense. “Summer is really about building the team and getting that chemistry,” Galvin said. “At the end of the day we just want to get better individually and as a team. (Individually) I’ve been working on a lot of things, mostly sticking to the fundamentals. I’m getting shots up every day and working on my technique and my ball-handling. There’s always room to improve.”
Galvin is a solidly-built wing who can excel at knocking down the three, but has the strength to drive past opponents and finish at the rim. He works hard on defense too and is hopeful that some college opportunities will come about this next month. He’s already been in talks with Portland State as there are some family connections with Viking head coach Barret Peery.
“My dad knows the coach very well and I like him too – he’s a great guy,” Galvin said. “I’m just trusting my process. Obviously I’d love to play Division I on a full ride and I know I can get there. But if I have to go a small school or JC first, I’d be OK with that. God is going to take care of me so I’ve got confidence.”
As noted, Galvin will run with Team Fly North in July. While he admits that his view of AAU basketball is more of individual play rather than his preference of team ball, he is hoping to increase his exposure to college coaches. “The main reason I play AAU is for the scouting, the viewing period, and playing against better competition,” Galvin said. “I just want to get better.”
Galvin currently ranks as the #17 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2019 rankings.
