Intro: Joel Watts (2020)
The Hoop Group Academic Camp was probably the best I have seen St. Rita 2020 point guard Joel Watts play. The St. Rita lead guard is a quick and shifty PG that handles it well in tight spaces. Made a lot of plays off dribble penetration with his burst through the defense. Hit an array of jumpers from mid-range and stretched it to three on occasion. Solid layup maker. A lot of steals that he would take end to end.
He spoke about the experience at Hoop Group.
“The camp is good. A lot of good young players. Everyone here has a chance to play at some level of college.”
Watts chatted with PHI about his sophomore campaign at St. Rita.
“I started off slow because I came off an injury, but I wouldn’t blame it the injury. I just didn’t play to the best of my abilities. Toward the middle of the season I started to pick it up.”
St. Rita has a young core of players that had a chance to further gel in June.
“It was good. We have about 13 guys coming back and we are ready to work.”
How would he describe his game?
“My strengths are quickness and I can shoot deep. Not many players can do that. I can space the floor out.”
What is going on with recruiting?
“I got a text from Tulsa. I am supposed to take a visit to Holy Cross at some point.”
