Three bigs make an impression during Rozier Summer League
I saw a big guy who can shoot the 3 and another big who is getting legitimate Division I looks and a third who could become a shot blocking force on the Northeast Ohio prep scene.
All three were on display during the games played on July 2.
The big man with the ability to hit the 3-pointer was Jayson Woodrich (2019), 6’5”, from Beachwood. The Bisons played without their second-best player as Collin Albers missed the game and only used five players in losing 63-53 to Cleveland Heights. Woodrich was able to get off several 3-pointers during the time I watched him and drained one. He showed off a solid stroke and the shots he did miss rimmed out. He can rebound on the defensive end, as well, and is not afraid to put the ball on the floor to create space.
“I’m strictly a shooter right now,” said Woodrich. “I see the floor pretty well. I work on my handle, I rebound pretty well and I work on my defense.”
He appears to understand the game and should be able to run off screens and picks to get his shots. He also intends on attending a prep school, which will give him an additional year to develop.
Woodrich plays AAU for All-Ohio Black.
“I’ve been getting stronger and working on my attacking game,” Woodrich said when asked what he’d done over the summer to improve.
Getting the 3-ball off is Woodrich’s strength.
“I can get it whenever they need it. Whether they want me to hit it off the dribble or off the screen. I’ll knock it down,” said Woodrich.
Another impressive big was 6’7” Luka Eller (2020) who suited up for Lake Catholic. Eller played well in spots but his squad was blown out by Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, 75-37.
Eller has good size and moves well. Against St. V he demonstrated an ability to create space outside with the dribble and drain a jump shot from distance.
Davidson invited Eller to compete at a camp earlier this summer, and he seemed to enjoy his time at that school.
“It was a good vibe,” Eller said.
“I’m a “3” guard. What the coaches like is on defense I can defend with the five; On offense, if I get a smaller kid on me I can post them up,” Eller said.
Eller lit up the opposition as a sophomore as he averaged 20 a game as a sophomore after averaging 15 a game as a freshman.
Amiron Dickerson (2021), 6’6” from Rhodes put on an impressive defensive performance as the Rams lost to Twinsburg 45-30.
Dickerson blocked a variety of shots in the contest, including one effort in which he blocked successive shots.
“He gets off his feet real quick and it makes a difference he is 6-6,” noted Rhodes coach Shawn Spencer.
