The new power rankings system in LHSAA clearly opened the door for teams to test themselves and not be punished and it may be why we see so many chalk looking brackets in the Top 28. It’s March Madness time or as we’ve begun calling it down here, Marsh Madness. Feedback is always welcome whether it’s through Twitter, email, or in the comment section below (Insert fancy arrow that points down). Keep in mind that the underlined teams are our predictions who who wins these semifinal match-ups.
Class 2A
2 Riverside Academy vs 3 Metairie Park Country Day (Wednesday, March 9, 8:00 PM) – These two district rivals split games during district and both have had incredible runs throughout the season to get to this point. Riverside, 27-5 on the season, is known for it’s two seniors who are looking for a 4th straight state title but big games from leading scorer Jared Butler (6’1 PG, 2018) has put them over the top. Country Day takes a 25-8 record against an extremely tough schedule into this semifinal match-up.
1 Madison Prep vs 4 North Caddo (Thursday, March 10, 6:15 PM) – North Caddo has been tough throughout the season and beaten some good teams at home. At 29-5 with one of the best players in the state, it’s no secret that they will provide a very stout test for MPA. However, MPA may be playing their best ball of the season and with everyone finally healthy, including Josh Anderson (6’5 G, 2017), they will look to build on that 29-4 record.
Class 3A
1 Peabody vs 4 Wossman (Wednesday, March 9, 4:30 PM) – Peabody was really challenged last round but has still not lost in state and hold an overall record of 34-1 on the season. Their big three has been playing as well as you can ask for all season and will look to continue against a team not far away from them in Wossman. Wossman has had a remarkable turnaround to 21-8 on the season and a big part of that is in thanks to Casey Jones Jr (5’10 G, 2017).
2 University Lab vs 3 St. Louis Catholic (Wednesday, March 9, 6:15 PM) – St. Louis lost in this same game to UHigh last season and are really looking to get over them hump and turn their 21-4 record into a much deeper run. They are buoyed by a fantastic backcourt and will need them to play one of their best games to win. UHigh at 29-4 is led by two great frontcourt players that include LSU signee Wayde Sims (6’6 F, 2016) and his improved perimeter play. They’re looking for their 3rd straight 3A title.
McNeese St. signee Kelvin Henry Jr. looks to lead St. Louis over the hump.
