The Top 28 for these two classes will see at least 2 teams that aren’t Top 4 seeds advancing. Here we will show each match-up, a player to watch, and who we expect to win (underlined)!
Class 4A
1 St. Thomas More vs 9 Plaquemine – STM has battled their way to the top throughout the season while Plaq fell a bit late but had a great 2nd round road win over STM’s rival Northside. This one could be very entertaining with rosters full of seniors not ready to end their career.
Player to Watch: DeVante Benjamin (6’1 G, STM, 2016)
5 AJ Ellender vs 4 Bossier – Both teams have been impressive throughout the playoffs thus far but Bossier’s size and physicality at home may be too much for Ellender. Looks for the athleticism of Ellender to try and overcome that physicality.
Player to Watch: Larry Robinson (6’0 PG, Bossier, 2016)
3 Edna Karr vs 11 Fair Park – Fair Park did a great job getting a big win on the road in the 2nd round over Breaux Bridge but this Edna Karr team is a whole new challenge. Karr has size, experience, and play a style that is tough for anyone to adjust to.
Player to Watch: Vincent Phillips (6’0 G, Karr, 2016)
2 Washington-Marion vs 10 McDonogh 35 – Here is an upset to predict solely because of the sight of the game being at McD35 and the talent of their best player. WM is no pushover and has what it takes to go get a road win though.
Player to Watch: DeJon Jarreau (6’5 G, McD 35, 2016)
Class 5A
1 Natchitoches Central vs 8 H.L. Bourgeois – HLB got the best of NCHS earlier this year when the Chiefs were just getting their football players back. That will be a tough task to repeat against a team that plays defense the way NCHS does.
Player to Watch: Brandon Rachal (6’5 G, NCHS, 2017)
13 East Ascension vs 21 Central Lafourche – Massive 2nd round wins for both teams with EA traveling to beat St. Paul’s and Cen Lafourche beating Ruston at home. This time EA gets to host and they are primed to make a Top 28 run, even if it’s a year earlier than expected.
Player to Watch: LeAaron Cain (6’2 SG, EA, 2017)
11 Ouachita Parish vs 19 Bonnabel – Knew Bonnabel would give Landry-Walker all they wanted in round 2 and ended up getting the wins as well while Ouachita was across town beating West Jefferson. Now Bonnabel has to travel north to face Ouachita but have the talent to get it done.
Player to Watch: Joseph Thompson (6’8 F, Bonnabel, 2017)
2 Scotlandville vs 10 St. Augustine – Scotlandville is very talented and on pace for a repeat in 5A while St Aug is a great defensive team as well and ready for the challenge at home. They’ll need a monster game from their backcourt duo to pull it off.
Player to Watch: Devante Jones (6’0 PG, St Aug, 2016)
