This award goes to the player with the most productive and successful season, both for himself and his team individually. While there were a bevy of arguably deserving candidates, no one deserved it more than Michael Bibby, Jr.
After winning the state tournament as a sophomore, Bibby was forced to sit out the latter part of his junior season due to an ACL tear. He took his time off seriously, studying film and aggressively rehabbing and boy did it pay off. After a strong spring and summer, Michael looked as if he was poised to have a tremendous season.
Coming into the season Shadow was considered the number one team in the state and they did not disappoint. The Matadors managed to finish 26-5 losing only to national powers while going undefeated against state of Arizona competition. More impressively, they only trailed at half in one of their 31 games played. Michael managed to be the team’s leading scorer (just under 20 ppg), leader in assists (5 per game), and finish top five on his team in rebounds and steals. He also shot 33% from beyond the arch while knocking in more 80 3-pointers.
Bibby capped his career off in the title game as the game’s leading scorer with 22 points along with 10 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals with three 3-pointers made.
Congrats to Michael for his state championship and Mr. Basketball honor.
