Mason Degenkolb
6’0 – PG – 2016
Not the biggest game you are ever going to see from Mason but honestly, his team didn’t need him to be tonight. Great team effort really halted West Lafayette’s offense and Tipton kept feeding Gutierrez.. Mason still showed that aggressiveness in spurts and looked as much like a point guard as he has to this point. Some dribble-drives but was more of a creator tonight than normal. At this point, what you see is what you get with Degenkolb, who is about as solid as they come in high school.
Sam Gutierrez
6’3 – SG – 2017
Probably the best, complete game I have seen from Sam so far. He was very aggressive and was looking for his shot all game and made quite a few of them. He took a lot of the shots you would normally see Mason take and Sam didn’t miss a beat. Looks like a legit 6’3 now and a little stronger than this summer. Showed off his jump shot all night with takes in the mid-range and beyond. He can pullup from 15′ pretty well. He will have to clean up the efficiency a little bit but the shot making ability was great to see.
Charlie Carter
6’4 – PF – 2017
Hard to see where Carter ends up at the end of his high school career but he can be really effective right now in spurts. A really strong low post threat but is only 6’4. When he gets touches in the paint, he showed tonight that he can turn on a defender and finish. He’ll have to change up something, whether that is his body or his skill set, but he’s got enough to think he can play in college.
West Lafayette:
Nai Carlisle
6’1 – PG – 2016
Nai was decent tonight but struggled to knock down shots as did the entire West Lafayette team. Nai looks considerably bigger and stronger and is as ready to go, body wise, as any senior in the state for the college game. His ball handling is a little better in terms of his technique but overdribbled a bit against a slew of Tipton guards that played close. He’ll get that cleaned up no problem in college. He’s still got a high ceiling and should be better at the next level than the high school game.
George Karlaftis
6’4 – PF – 2019
Really liked what I saw out of the freshman post player. He’s a thick, strong kid that could still grow a bit more but maybe only to 6’6. He’s pretty skilled and aggressive enough in the paint to make plays. He’s good on the block where he can get a good seal and go over his left shoulder. Rebounds pretty well and can go out of his area and get a board. His upside isn’t really high but he could a very good high school player.
Matt Krause
6’5 – PF – 2018
Krause didn’t do a ton in this game but he still made quite a few plays on both end of the court. Good size at 6’5 and lean, should still grow a bit. Showed a bit of athleticism at times getting up and down the court quickly and creating trouble in the passing lanes. Can play inside and out, stretching the floor to the three point line. Some upside if he looks to be more of an offensive player.
