Player of the Week: Feb. 8–14
Derek Van Ryswyk, Glenville-Emmons — DVR turned in an absolutely monstrous performance against Mabel-Canton, logging 42 points and 18 boards in the win. He also did a 19 and 16 double-double against Alden-Conger. This 6-6 junior has the makings of a major small-town sleeper.
Goanar Mar, DeLaSalle — The 2017 D1 prospect had a big week; Mar gave De 29 points in a key win over Cretin-Derham Hall, 25 over Fridley and scored 71 total over three games. De does a better job of controlling the game’s tempo than any other team in the state, so each basket is crucial.
Melvin Newbern, Jr., Robbinsdale Cooper — In a battle of teams tied for second in the Metro West, Newbern went off, scoring 39 points against St. Louis Park in a convincing win. He and his younger brother Beijan have been producing in tandem all season, and they’ve helped the Hawks to a five-game winning streak and a 16-5 overall record.
Sam Gubbrud, St. Paul Central — Sam helped push St. Paul Central over Highland Park in a classic rivalry game by scoring 30 points — 22 of which were in the second half, and he also hit two free throws to clinch the final seconds. Another win against Harding helped solidify Central’s position at the top of the conference.
Isaiah Dobson, Stillwater — With shades of Syracuse’s Jonny Flynn, Dobson scored 42 points for Stillwater in Friday’s incredible five-overtime win against Cretin-Derham Hall. Something must have inspired Isaiah at halftime, because 39 of his points were after the break.
Michael Hurt, Roch. John Marshall — Michael put together another complete performance last week; this time it was 30 pts, 9 rebs, 4 assists and 2 blocks in a 30-point throttling of Northfield, a talented team in its own right. He also added 19 in another big win on Saturday, this time against Faribault.
