Newbern’s 39 points were just what the Hawks needed. He slashed to the rim and tortured the Orioles all night while his opponents suffered from crippling foul trouble. Besides a four-game slide in the middle of the season, Cooper’s 16-5 mark is looking pretty good at this point.
“We’re having a turnaround season,” Newbern said. “Lots of youth, so the program will be set for the future. We beat Benilde-St. Margaret’s both times we played them this season.”
Although he drew quite a few D2 looks and a couple offers after a nice summer with Net Gain, Melvin is now looking mostly at junior college opportunities.
“I have lots of jucos talking to me,” Newbern said. “I received a offer from Northeast Nebraska CC last week, and I’ll visit Kirkwood, Iowa Western and NE Nebraska in the coming weeks. There’s also Olney Central, RCTC and Butler CC.”
Cooper will face off against league-leading Chaska on Tuesday in what promises to be a great game. It then finishes the regular season on Friday against Bloomington Jefferson.
