Continue ReadingCamanche used an efficient offensive attack, and limited substitutions, to control Friday night’s game from start to finish against Regina, en route to a 73-62 road win. The Indians scored the first four points of the game and never relinquished that lead, although Regina kept it close throughout.
Camanche played only six players, with Dev Patel the only player outside the starting lineup to see action. That substitution didn’t come until there was 1:10 left in the third quarter.
Camanche (16-5) was led by Dylan Dodson, who had 24 points on 10-11 shooting. Dylan Hundley had 17 points, Blake Bialas 12 and Dakota Soenksen 10. Bialas added 12 assists in the win.
Iowa City Regina (11-8) was led by Nathan Stenger, with 19 points. Jocoa Kerschen added 13 off the bench behind the strength of four three-pointers.
Camanche player evaluations
PG Blake Bialas (5’10”, 2016): I had the point guard down for 12 assists on the night, showing a complete control of the game on the offensive end. He’s a good ball handler and does a nice job penetrating the defense and making plays for his teammates. He does a nice job getting into the paint, drawing the defense in and dropping off a pass for an easy bucket. He also showed the ability to hit open shots from behind the arc, showing good form on his shot.
SG Tre Austin (6’0″, 2017): Austin does a nice job moving off the ball and is a solid perimeter shooter. Moves well laterally on the defensive end, has quick hands and plays effectively both on-and-off the ball.
GF Dakota Soenksen (6’3″, 2017): A long, athletic wing with the ability to score both inside and from the perimeter. He does a good amount of the ball handling for Camanche, showing the ability to bring the ball up the floor against defensive pressure. He’s an active rebounder on the defensive end, showing his athleticism in outleaping other players for a number of rebounds. Interesting prospect to keep an eye on over the summer and next season.
F Dylan Hundley (6’4″, 2017): Hundley filled the stat sheet to the tune of 17 points, six rebounds and six assists. A lanky combo forward, he’s got the ability to finish at the rim and can also extend out to the arc and make shots. He moves well off the ball, routinely flashing to the rim for finishes or getting his feet set for shots off the catch from behind the arc.
PF Dylan Dodson (6’5″, 2016): Dodson was dominant throughout the game, showing good touch around the rim with a number of post moves, and he has great hands. He’s still very thin, and could get pushed around at the next level, but his offensive skill set is high and his footwork is solid. He does a nice job keeping the ball high both on the catch in the post and after pulling down rebounds. On the defensive end he is a solid shot blocker with good instincts and timing.
Iowa City Regina player evaluations
G Nathan Stenger (6’3″, 2016): The strong lead guard finishes well at the rim, using his upper body strength to power through contact. He’s a stat sheet stuffer, finishing with 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists. He does a nice job pushing in transition after pulling down rebounds, is a solid passer and very good rebounder for a guard. A plus-athlete with the ability to score at all three levels but is at his best attacking the rim.
PG Ethan Suchomel (5’10”, 2016): Did a nice job keeping the ball moving on the offensive end, finishing with nine assists. Has the ability to penetrate the defense and set his teammates up for looks.
SG Jocoa Kerschen (6’2″, 2018): The sophomore came off the bench to score 13 points, hitting four 3-pointers. They did a great job running him off of baseline screens to get open looks in either corner. He’s got a quick release and is a very good perimeter shooter off the catch.
PF Andrew Adamec (6’1″, 2016): The lefty has a good mid-range game and the ability to creatively score around the rim. He’s undersized but uses good footwork to free himself for looks.
F Thomas Rapp (6’3″, 2017): Moves well off the ball and can shoot from behind the arc. Needs to make his release quicker, but he’s got extended range.
GF Ryne Schooley (6’1″, 2018): Schooley came off the bench to give the Regals nine points, knocking down three 3-pointers. He moves well off the ball, has his feet squared on the catch and has a fairly quick release.
