Continue ReadingMinnesota pushed their ten year Border Battle record to 34-23 this year winning five of the six games in the Onalaska, Wisconsin event. Minnesota and Wisconsin have traded hosting the event for ten years now and after 57 games played Minnesota has a strong edge in the competition. Is Minnesota basketball better? That’s a debate for somebody else to have but in these games they have been better.
NHR gives you the top ten performances from Minnesota’s talent at the Border Battle.
- Tyler Johnson (Mpls North, Senior). “Are you not entertained” Johnson asked after being the king of the exciting highlights at the event. The Minnesota football recruit scored a team high 17 points including a tip-dunk they are still talking about and another strong two hander. Both led to Johnson taking photos and signing autographs.
- Chase Grinde (Spring Grove, Junior). When it comes to “winter stock raisers” the 6-foot-3 guard from Spring Grove is one of the top names. His 25 points and five rebounds led Spring Grove to an 83-69 win over Columbus Catholic.
- Brady Schuttemeier (Spring Grove, Senior). A 6-foot-3 forward that knocked down five treys and spread the floor for Spring Grove to gash Columbus Catholic inside and out. Brady scored 24 for his team and let schools know that he is a potential shooter that can change a game.
- Brady Kuchinka (Lake City, Senior). Brady was playing with a heavy heart losing his grandfather but he responded well down the stretch scoring seven straight that gave the Tigers the push needed to beat Westby 63-57.
- Jordan Horn (Tartan, Junior). Open the game with a couple treys and another field goal, hit a trey down the stretch, produced a team high 17 points for the Titans who beat Memorial in overtime.
- Sage Booker (DeLaSalle, Sophomore). La Crosse Central denied the Islander top two scores (Goanar and Gabe) in a triangle and two for parts of the game so the Islanders needed somebody to step up and Booker did with a career high 15 points.
- Jamil Jackson (Mpls North, Senior). Jamil caught an alley-oop from Dembley early, had another big time dunk later, scored 17 and joined Tyler as a guy that the locals wanted photos and autographs from.
- Marc Kjos (Lake City, Sophomore). The 5-foot-9 guard came off the bench, drained six treys, and kept his team just in front of Westby in the heart of the contest. Marc scored a team high 18 points.
- Jordan Thompson (Tartan, Junior). Scored all 15 of his points at the arc and gave the Titans some important shots down the stretch of regulation.
- Samm Jones (DeLaSalle, Senior). Jones scored 14 taking advantage of so much focus on Mar/Kalscheur and helping the Islanders respond well to Thursday’s defeat.
