Note: these are not intended as rankings, merely recognition for squads who have made marked progress over the last calendar year.
Here’s a peek at the Ninth Region:
- Covington Holy Cross — The Indians, 13-14 last season, stand 17-5 as of this writing, among them victories against fellow region frontrunner Cooper, Rowan County, Madison Central, Conner, Holmes, Covington Catholic and Newport, to go along with a split of their two games to date with Newport Central Catholic. Tyler Bezold (17.0 ppg), Leighton Schrand (15.1 ppg) and Erich Jakobowski (10.0 ppg) lead the Holy Cross charge.
- Newport —The Wildcats possess 14 wins in their first 20 games after a 14-17 showing last winter. Rowan County, Morgan County, Beechwood and Dixie Heights are among Newport’s conquests, as well as a split of two meetings with Bishop Brossart. Ethan Snapp‘s 17.7 ppg lead the Wildcats, along with 14.5 ppg from Kedan Davis. Dates with Male, Cooper, Covington Catholic, Holy Cross and Augusta will further prepare Newport for postseason in a rugged Ninth Region.
- Beechwood — The Tigers collected 13 wins in their first 19 tries after going 10-16 last season. J.T. Toebbe has logged 13.9 ppg, while Ben Toebbe checks in with 11.9 ppg. Beechwood lacks a true big-time win, but has chances to pick one up with a backloaded schedule that feature Walton-Verona, Newport Central Catholic, Covington Catholic and Conner in four straight tilts from Jan. 30-Feb. 6. Holy Cross pays Fort Mitchell a visit a week later.
Honorable mention: Conner (12-15 last year, 11-6 this season), Cooper (18-9 last year, 17-2 this season), Dayton (8-20 last year, 10-8 this season), Ryle (6-23 last season, 8-11 this year), Villa Madonna (9-19 last year, 9-11 this season)
