Note: these are not intended as rankings, merely recognition for squads who have made marked progress over the last calendar year.
Here’s a look across the Seventh Region:
- Male — The Bulldogs, under first-year coach Willie Feldhaus, started the season 16-3 after a 15-14 mark last year. Fern Creek, Madison Central, North Hardin, Doss, Southern, Kentucky Country Day and Ballard count among a litany of quality wins for Male. Alex Cook is recording 18.3 ppg and 8.7 rpg for the Bulldogs, whose lone region loss came to Trinity in the Louisville Invitational Tournament.
- Christian Academy of Louisville — The Centurions’ 11-9 record this winter marks a great turnaround from a 9-22 ledger last season. CAL’s best win in terms of opponent record is a 61-49 toppling of Garrard County in December. Parker Jones (18.1 ppg) and Kenneth Purvis (11.0 ppg) lead the Centurions’ offense. A matchup with Eastern on Feb. 5 is the Centurions’ last chance at a big region win in the regular season.
- Kentucky Country Day — The Bearcats went 12-13 last year, but picked up 10 victories in their first 15 showings this season. A one-point victory at CAL on Dec. 15 is KCD’s best region win. The Bearcats were also region All “A” Classic champions. Colin Ferguson (22.0 ppg, 10.3 rpg) and Anthony Mathis (21.7 ppg) provide high-scoring threats.
Honorable mention: Collegiate (3-19 last year, 6-11 this season); Brown (4-22 last year, 6-9 this season)
