Continue ReadingThe Ankeny Hawks proved to be one of the top teams in Class 4A on Friday night, cruising to a win over fellow top-10 team, and crosstown rival, Ankeny Centennial, 54-35.
The theme of the night for the Hawks was a swarming defense that made life tough for the Jaguars, allowing Centennial to score no more than 11 points in any quarter. Centennial had a possession in the fourth quarter that exemplified their struggle on the offensive end, using more than 1:30 off the clock, along with a pair of timeouts, before they even had a semi-open look at the bucket.
Centennial jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead behind strong early play from post Chase Edwards, but Ankeny answered by going on a 19-2 run, and they never looked back.
Ankeny (11-3) was led by Drew Maschoff with 13 points. He also had eight rebounds and four assists. Older brother Tyler Maschoff was the only other Hawk in double figures, chipping in 11.
Centennial (9-3) was led by Connor Cullen, who had a game-high 16 points. Chase Edwards added 12 for the Jaguars.
Ankeny Centennial player evaluations
Connor Kasperbauer – 6’3″ SG – 2017: Kasperbauer, a 12.0 point/game scorer, was held scoreless in this contest, but contributed at a high level on the defensive glass. He’s a solid athlete who does a nice job high-pointing the ball and has the ability to lead the break after pulling down the board. He went 0-4 from behind the arc, but a few of those just rimmed out and he showed solid form and elevation on his jumper.
Jalen Smith – 6’2″ SG – 2017: Smith came off the bench to provide the Jaguars with a bit of a spark from behind the arc. He’s got extended range, is a confident shooter and moves well off the ball. Has a quick release and generally has his feet set and squared on the catch.
Connor Cullen – 6’4″ GF – 2016: A solid ball handler, Cullen showcased a bit of an “old man’s” game, displaying crafty footwork around the rim and a plus-mid-range game. He’s a well-built guard with good upper body strength that he can use to get into the paint and finish.
Chase Edwards – 6’3″ PF – 2016: Like Cullen, Edwards is a crafty player around the rim with good footwork and touch. He was dominant early in the game, scoring six points on the Jaguars’ first five possessions. He’s got the ability to finish with both hands around the rim, can go over either shoulder with his post moves and generally gets good position on the block.
Ankeny player evaluations
Drew Maschoff – 6’4″ GF – 2017: There was no question that the younger Maschoff was the most talented player on the floor in this game, displaying an almost effortless all-around game with the ability to score at all three levels, rebound at a high level and displaying great court vision and passing ability. He displayed his athletic ability with an effortless, but powerful, one-handed dunk in transition, finishing through a foul. A long, athletic defender, he does a nice job playing the passing lanes on the defensive end and can be a solid on-ball defender when he’s locked in. He does a nice job changing pace in the halfcourt, allowing him to set up a quick first step.
Tyler Maschoff – 6’4″ GF – 2016: The older Maschoff is no slouch himself, showing many of the same traits that Drew does. Showed the ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the rim and finish with an impressive first step on a baseline drive. Moves well off the ball and is a capable shooter from distance, with a quick release off the catch.
Trystan Cummins – 6’5″ SG – 2016: It was a quiet scoring night for Cummins, but he showed an impressive ability to keep the ball moving in the halfcourt and set up his teammates for easy buckets. He’s got good court vision and good size for an off-guard. Could potentially play some point guard at the next level, where his size could be a big asset.
Conor Riordan – 6’2″ G – 2016: Creative finisher at the rim who also has the ability to shoot from the arc. Moves well off the ball, keeps the ball moving on the offensive end and is a solid defender both on-and-off the ball.
Joel Roberts – 6’7″ C – 2016: Roberts comes off the bench for the Hawks, giving them good minutes on the interior. He sets hard (legal) screens and does a nice job rolling to the bucket after setting them. He’s got the ability to finish with either hand in the paint, displaying good touch and solid footwork around the rim. A physical interior presence for a guard-heavy team.
