In the backcourt where there a multiple D1 prospects left and plenty of other talent across the board. We’ll continue our look at available players in the class of 2016 with the top 10 forwards whether it be on the wing or in the post. Some players in the rankings above others aren’t on here due to either another sport being primary or they won’t be playing basketball anymore.
Jalen Johnson (6’7 F, UHigh) – Quite possibly the hottest 2016 prospect in Louisiana, Johnson has played at a high level the entire season. Johnson is a lefty with range beyond the three point line who has been a starter on back to back state title teams. This summer he proved he can defend the wing and with his 7 foot plus wingspan, can defend either forward position.
Khalea Turner (6’9 F/C, Helen Cox) – Turner returned to the state this year after being at Findlay Prep. He still sports a high basketball IQ but isn’t known for scoring a ton. Can be very efficient from the high post as a passer and defends with positioning and his size. Shows touch out to the free throw line. Needs to be more consistent.
Garrick Green (6’5 F, Scotlandville) – Another player with state championships under his belt, Green has shown the ability to both defend the perimeter and knock down shots from out there. Needs polishing doing so and plays mostly in the post for his high school team. High IQ player who can bring his athleticism and defensive desires to the table nightly.
Will Reese (6’4 SF, Anacoco) – Last season’s LHSAA Top 28 MVP is a knock down shooter who has a decision to make when it comes to which sport to play. While he’ll likely play baseball, he sports plenty of range on the basketball court and is always a threat with or without the ball to score. Limited athletically means his defensive potential is limited.
Javante Walker (6’7 F/C, St. Martinville) – Walker is another big bodied player who can play the high or low post at the next level. Has nice range to 15 foot and has shouldered the load for St. Martinville this year. Rebounds his area and does a nice job of grabbing a few out of area rebounds as well. LM potential.
Brenton Jarrow (6’5 SF, Warren Easton) – Jarrow will likely have to go JUCO route but has more potential than even some ahead of him. A solid jump shot out to the three point line and can put it on the floor. Finishes well above the rim and brings flashes of everything you’d want from a wing. Needs to find a home in JUCO who will help polish the entire game up.
Ray Anderson (6’4 SF, West Jefferson) – Anderson was a very hot name early in the season as West Jeff got off to a great start. Can knock down the outside shot and finishes above the rim when attacking. Currently has about a two dribble max on the offensive end when it comes to efficiency and while he defends perimeter, needs to show he can do so throughout a game.
Cedric Harris (6’4 SF, C.E. Byrd) – Harris is one of the better shooters in the front court. While there are holes in his game, the defined skill as a shooter and scorer makes him an interesting prospect. A slim frame but has plenty of room to bulk up and become an all around player.
Cameron Pottain (6’7 F, Lakeview) – Pottain is a big bodied forward who has very sneaky athletic ability. A younger senior who has plenty of room to develop both his body and his game. Often over shadowed by his teammate signed to Arkansas, Pottain has a very well rounded game inside and out.
Darian Jones (6’7 F, Brusly) – Listed as a center, he’s shown the ability to play the power forward position and even flashes a jumper and the handles to play some on the wing. While he’s likely two years away from being an impact player, he’s even younger than Pottain. The little brother of the Vandy star will grow physically and plenty in his game. A huge sleeper!
