Continue ReadingIt was another terrific day of basketball at the Mini Dome on the campus of Southern University as big time players made plays consistently throughout the day. 7 of the 8 match-ups were within six points at the final buzzer and that included on overtime game and numerous games down to the final couple of possessions. Madison Prep hosted it’s 4th consecutive Hall of Fame Classic and this one lived up to the billing of previous events.
Jehovah Jireh vs Baker
This game came down to the sheer number of free throws JJCA was about to take and make. They came away with a 71-67 win thanks to 40 more Free Throws attempted. Jakobey Hitchens and Trenton Payne were able to get to the line consistently and each scored over 20 points to lead the way. Ronnie Hamilton does it all for Baker and came away very close to a triple double while running the show.
Hamilton Christian vs Lutcher
Lutcher is a team very accustomed to hitting double digit three’s in a game but the big arena and Hamilton defense held them to just 4 made 3s. That would be enough as they held on late for a 60-57 win. Seniors Brendon Taylor (18 points) and Jaylon Wingate (17 points) led the way. For Hamilton Christian, it was junior Cam Hare (20 points) who turned heads with his play which included a euro step into a two handed dunk on the break.
Edna Karr vs Port Allen
Edna Karr is one of the 4A favorites and after beating Landry-Walker friday night, showed why with a sound 60-38 win over Port Allen. Karr defends at a high level and guards John Maxmillion (11 points) and Vincent Phillips (10 points) led the way for their balanced attack offensively. Andre Williams scored 12 to lead Port Allen against that tough defense. Senior PG Nigel Allen made plays early to keep it close before Karr closed it out.
East Ascension vs Ellender
Two of the more improved teams this season played to a very tight 66-62 win for Easy Ascension. 2017 guard LeAaron Cain did what he always does getting to the line 14 times en route to another 20 point performance. For Ellender, it was Curtis Anderson who led them in scoring with 16 points as Ellender battled foul trouble throughout the game. Both teams are gearing up for district then a run into the playoffs.
Episcopal vs Northside
Playing against a tough, athletic squad for the second night in a row in the Mini Dome was tough for Episcopal as they lost in OT 41-35 to Northside. Senior PG Brandon Ellis showed off his scoring ability early and late when they struggled to do so and finished with 14 points (including 4 in OT). 2016 shooter Chris Beckman Jr had 17 for Episcopal who saw nobody else eclipse the 5 point mark. That included another 4 three’s made.
Christian Life vs Helen Cox
In one of the more exciting moments of the night, CLA senior guard Ludovic Kader scored on a tip in off an out of bounds play at the buzzer to give them the 55-53 win over a finally full strength Helen Cox. Kader finished with 17 for CLA, as did junior Marquis Webb (5 made 3s). ULL signee for Cox, Roydell Brown attacked the rim consistently to finish with 33 points to keep Cox in it the entire night.
McKinley vs Southern Lab
McKinley and 2018 guard Tyrece Radford scored just enough to win 31-30 over a struggling Southern Lab squad. Radford led all scorers with 12 points while a 3 at the buzzer gave Southern Lab 2017 F Dexter Dennis 10 points as well to be the only other player in double digits in this affair. After scoring only 8 at half and 13 after 3, Lab turned up the pace to score 17 in the 4th but it wasn’t enough despite McKinley only scoring 1 point in the 3rd quarter.
Madison Prep vs Lafayette Christian
The feature match-up of the evening didn’t disappoint as LCA game away with a 53-52 win thanks to a late made free throw from 2018 PG Greg Williams. McNeese signee Kalob LeDoux was the high man with with 23 points while his twin and fellow signee, Jacob LeDoux added 15. For MPA, it was 2017 G Josh Anderson who had 15 points despite being held scoreless in the first half. William Loyd continued his strong play for MPA with 12 points.
