Tecumseh did get some contributions from players like Jordan Patterson and Tom Mammel, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with the Railsplitters. By halftime, the score was 36-27.
In the second half, the Railsplitters pulled away to a commanding lead. Groce continued making big plays, but JeJuan Williams and Tahj Chatman had some big plays of their own. Late in the game, Ypsilanti Lincoln unloaded the bench up by double-digits. However, it might have been a tad too early as it allowed Tecumseh back into the game. Max Benedict and Kevin Sheats both made some key steals and buckets in transition.
Nonetheless, once Ypsilanti Lincoln re-inserted its lineup, it was all over. The final score was a 66-48 win for Ypsilanti Lincoln.
Ypsilanti Lincoln
Isaiah Brown – Center – 6’4″ – Sophomore
A big center that’s willing to use his body and fight through contact for rebounds.
Tahj Chatman – Guard – 5’10” – Freshman
A shifty guard that can make some decent plays with or without the ball. Started to heat up in the second half thanks to his outside shooting. Still, his biggest impact was in transition, where he consistently applied pressure to the opponent.
Jamari Collins – Center – 6’5″ – Senior
Stocky and physical bruiser inside that can set quality screens on the offensive end and played very physically inside defensively.
Jesse Davis – Guard – 6’2″ – Sophomore
His shot wasn’t falling early, but showed resilience by staying committed to taking the looks when he was open.
Ty Groce – Forward – 6’7″ – Senior
Quick and efficient when he receives the ball inside the paint. Additionally, he did an excellent job of passing from the interior of Tecumseh’s zone. He did start the second half a little slowly (thanks to some shoe traction issues), but got back into rhythm after a huge drive to the hoop through and over a defender on the wing. On the defensive end, he was a consistent shot blocking threat in the paint. Although there was a size advantage for Groce, he was a key factor in preventing penetration from Tecumseh. All told, Groce put up an incredible unofficial stat line of 31 points, nine rebounds, four assists, 10 steals, and eight blocks. Groce is ranked No. 7 in Prep Hoop Michigan’s 2016 rankings.
Tray Jackson – Guard – 6’7” – Sophomore
Jackson didn’t play a ton of minutes and had a bit of a quiet night. Nonetheless, he displayed a pretty smooth stroke and did a nice job of finishing around the rim early on in the game. Additionally, he displayed nice control and firm footwork on the boards. Of course, he is still working to develop his interior and transition game. Jackson is ranked No. 14 in Prep Hoop Michigan’s 2018 rankings.
Nick Linton – Guard – 5’11” – Senior
He displayed a solid handle and made some key passes both on the perimeter and in the paint. When Ypsilanti Lincoln had a little bit of a slow start to the second half, he made a great feed to Collins to get the Railsplitters on the board.
Charve Patterson – Guard – 6’2″ – Senior
He was able to get inside and played through contact. Also had the opportunity to display his jump shot a few times from the perimeter. On the defensive end, he did a good job of bringing pressure and had a nice steal in the first quarter.
JeJuan Williams – Guard – 6’2″ Senior
Played really solid on-ball defense. Kept pressure on opponents by staying low and using his length to disrupt ball handlers. On the offensive end, he displayed a decent handle and made an impact by moving without the ball.
Tecumseh
Max Benedict – Forward – 6’4” – Senior
Made the majority of his impact later in the game. When Tecumseh was trying to make a comeback, Benedict was able to get to the free throw line and made a solid steal that led to a bucket at the other end. All told, showed a good amount of resiliency.
Drew Benschoter – Guard – 6’0″ – Sophomore
He showed some poise despite Ypsilanti Lincoln’s consistent pressure in both transition and the half court setting. Had a few nice mid-range buckets.
Drew Kapnick – Guard – 6’0″ – Senior
Stayed committed defensively and used active feet to stay in front of opponents.
Tom Mammel – Forward – 6’4″ – Senior
Did a decent job of finishing at the basket and fighting through contact inside. Additionally, he made a few key offensive rebounds thanks to solid control with his hands and used some ball fakes to force fouls near the rim. Set up some nice screens and was arguably Tecumseh’s best player early on.
Trey Mitchell – Guard – 5’11” – Junior
Converted from the free throw line early in the first quarter when Tecumseh was struggling. Displayed a relatively quick release on a nice step back jumper.
Jordan Patterson – Guard – 5’10” – Junior
Relatively quick and energetic guard that can make plays in transition and made some quality effort plays on Friday. Had one play early on where he was able to force a turnover by chasing the ball out of bounds. Along with that, he hit a huge shot in the second quarter from the wing and did a nice job of pushing the ball in transition.
Kevin Sheats – Guard/Forward – 6’2″ Junior
Made a few nice steals in the second half and was able to make an impact running in transition.
