Top 2019 Forwards
The state of Michigan has a lot of talented guards, but the forward position is pretty deep as well. Here are five of the top forwards in the state.
Romeo Weems (New Haven)
Weems is the top rated player in the state and for good reason. The 6-foot-6 Depaul commit can play any position on the floor and makes everyone better. He has freak athleticism and loves catching lobs. He is a very good defender that loves to hype up a crowd by getting a steal and dunking on the other end. He is a do it all kind of player and I believe he has the skill set to make it to the NBA.
Carrington McCaskill (Detroit Reniassance)
Like Weems, McCaskill is an athletic freak that can hype up a crowd with a thunderous dunk. He’s very active around the rim and I love his willingness to back down smaller defenders instead of taking everyone off of the dribble. Defensively, McCaskill is a great rim protector and good at using his length to jump into passing lanes. He has a ton of Division I offers and will be a big time help to any college program.
Myron Gardner (Detroit Loyola)
If I had to describe Gardner in one word, it would be explosive. He gets from point A to point B very quickly and he plays his heart out on every possession. Gardner runs the floor very well and is active around the glass, which allows him to get a lot of tip dunks. He’s got a nice jump shot and he looks like LeBron James when chasing people down for blocks. He’s a Division I caliber player and easily a top 10 player in the state.
Luke Maranka (Grand Rapids Angels)
Maranka might not get the exposure some of the top names in the state do, but he’s just as good. The 6-foot-10 forward has a big motor and that allows him to track down a lot of offensive rebounds. He’s everything you want in a big man. He’s great around the basket, protects the rim, runs the floor and isn’t afraid of contact. I really like his game and so do a few Division I teams. I think his stock will rise a lot during his senior season.
Kalil Whitehead (Cass Tech)
Whitehead is a very good player and actually a little bit under the radar. He is a very good shooter with a nice, quick release. He is good at using his quick release and size to get his shot off. However, the thing I like most about his game is his cutting ability. If you watch any highlights or tape of Whitehead, he cuts a lot and his teammates do a great job of finding him. When his teammates to do find him, he knows exactly what to do with the ball as he is very athletic. Whitehead is a big time player and should play Division I ball.
