Fairfax Summer Classic: Top Performers (Day 2, Part I)
Los Angeles, Ca. — After a day-long cancellation that halted game action Tuesday, the 32nd annual Fairfax Summer Classic resumed Wednesday with seven games featuring many of Southern California’s top high school programs. Here is the first set of top performers on the day.
Ryan Evans, Mater Dei
Evans made the inter-Trinity League transfer from Santa Margarita to Mater Dei, and in his first action on a big state with his new teammates, the 6-foot-2 junior shooting guard did what he does best: Make shots. Evans scored 21 points in the Monarchs win over Valencia with a majority of those buckets coming from 3-point range.
Dennis Flowers III, St. Francis
Flowers followed up his explosive 25-point scoring outburst Monday in a loss to Sierra Canyon with a 27-point effort in a win over Santa Monica. The senior shooting guard got hot from 3-point range in a hurry, scoring 18 of his 27 points in the second half, helping St. Francis open a 17-point lead at one point. Flowers has the green light, but there were times when he launched shots not recognizing time and score.
St. Francis guard Dennis Flowers III scored 27 points in a win over Santa Monica Wednesday at the Fairfax Summer Classic.Terren Frank, Sierra Canyon
Frank is rapidly emerging as Sierra Canyon’s most consistent basketball player on a game-to-game basis. The 6-foot-8 junior forward scored 27 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in the Trailblazers second-straight blowout victory. Frank is as versatile as they come as a scorer as he can knock down mid-range and 3-point jumpers, but also creates and exposes mismatches with his ability to score in the paint over smaller defenders.
Benny Gealer, Rolling Hills Prep
“Benny G” is a high risk, high reward type player in that he’s got the utmost confidence in his abilities, but is also willing to take some interesting chances with his shot taking and playmaking. Gealer delivered the high reward part of his game Wednesday, scoring 33 points with a overflowing handful of 3-pointers in Rolling Hills Prep’s 79-69 victory over Beverly Hills.
Andre Henry, St. Francis
Henry might not standout among other guards in SoCal athletically, but he makes it up with basketball IQ and decision making in crunch time. Henry scored 20 efficient points in the win over Santa Monica, but it was him, when SaMo made its final push, who steadied to pace and navigated the Vikings’ full-court trapping pressure defense.
