Grand View Team Camp: Standouts (Part II)
It’s been an eventful month of June, with team camps providing plenty of summer hoops action to cover, last weekend in Des Moines at Grand View University added to that. The June camps give us a glimpse into what we can expect next winter across the Iowa high school hoops landscape. Below, we’ll highlight a handful of players we saw in action Friday. TJ Rushing took a look at Saturday’s play here.
2019 PG Conner Hill, South Hamilton
Hill was a standout for the Hawks on Friday, putting his full repertoire on display. The 6-foot guard has a slight build, but he’s incredibly quick. One of the things that stands out most about him is his ability to change speeds while maintaining body control. He’s got the Chris Paul slam-on-the-brakes move down pat. He’s also got a smooth jumper and is very creative at the rim, which allows him to finish despite not having plus-length. Defensively, his IQ shines through as he’s opportunistic with creating turnovers that lead to easy points.
2019 SF Logan Peters, South Hamilton
What stands out about the 6-foot-2 wing is his ability to move without the ball. He’s always in motion and makes smart, quick and effective cuts to space that allowed him to get easy bucket after easy bucket. That knack for finding space is aided by his plus-athleticism. When he does have the ball, he’s methodical and patient, willing his way past his defender to create for himself and others.
2020 G Josh Oltman, Pella
The 6-foot-2 guard had a smooth, clean stroke that made him effective from beyond the 3-point arc. He was able to get his shot off quickly and efficiently.
2019 SF/PF Nathan Weaver, Chariton
Weaver was really, really good Saturday against Roland-Story. He was by far the most effective player for Chariton, which suffered every time he went to the bench. He’s got a big frame, but is capable of handling the ball and getting to the rim – he uses his strength more than just skill to get his work done offensively. He runs the floor well and is an excellent rebounder who grabs carroms not just that come directly to him but outside of his area as well.
2019 PG Carter Greenfield, Roland-Story
Greenfield was extremely active offensively for the Norse – getting to the rim and shooting in the mid-range off the dribble, shooting 3s and playmaking. He’s not especially strong, but is capable of finishing through contact at the rim. When Roland-Story had success offensively, Greenfield was often at the center of the action.
2019 G Kade Fagan, Roland-Story
Fagan really made his mark at the 3-point arc. He’s got a quick, compact release that allowed him to get shots up against length – often making them to help push the Norse ahead and spread the floor as well.
2021 G Malik Allen, Des Moines North
Allen doesn’t have much size at 5-foot-9, but he’s got plenty of range. The Polar sophomore connected from deep time and again, exhibiting nice shooting form.
2019 Jordan Jackson, Fort Dodge
The Dodgers senior had the most success in Fort Dodge’s game against Des Moines North, which the Polar Bears controlled from start to finish. He’s strong and athletic, and showed off a nice jumper from mid-range.
2019 Issa Samake, Grand View Christian
The recent Drake commit showed off all the physical tools he has that make him special. He’s got size, strength, speed, jumping ability and wingspan of a potentially special Missouri Valley Conference player. The rest of his game isn’t totally refined, but he’s shown flashes that make his talent tantalizing. As he continues to build his skill level – he was consistently making 3s on Saturday – he’s going to continue to move toward his ceiling.
