Here’s an updated look at the top candidates in Northeast Ohio.
5. Dwayne Cohill, Holy Name
Through six games, Cohill is averaging 28.3 ppg. Not bad for just a sophomore. In the end, it will be hard to see the voters go with a sophomore unless Holy Name catches fire and Cohill is in the focus.
4. Tervell Beck, Cleveland Central Catholic
At 26.6 ppg, Beck is reaching the potential that people have been waiting for years for him to reach. He’s been a force inside and outside, while making sure that the Ironmen don’t drop off after a run to the state title game.
3. A.J. Gareri, Ellet
The biggest riser this season is Gareri, who has taken his game to a whole new level as a junior. The Orangeman big man is averaging 24.1 ppg and 13 rpg. The last player from the Akron area to win was LeBron James.
2. Willie Jackson, Garfield Heights
It often looks like a man amongst boys when Jackson is on the court, as he turned himself into a physical force that is among the most hard-working players in the area. At 27 ppg and 14 rpg, he’s having a special senior season.
1. Markell Johnson, East Tech
At this point, Johnson might be the frontrunner for the whole state. The junior guard is averaging 38.3 ppg and has propelled his struggling supporting cast to a 6-1 start. A Cleveland city player has not won since Chet Mason in 2000.
