Florida Team Camp: Day 1 Notes
The University of Florida’s team camp started on Friday with a busy schedule.
Here is a look at the top performers from the day.
Deebo Coleman (West Nassau)
Deebo Coleman continues to get better with each game. He is long, active and a leader by example. The 2021 point guard hit a 3 with a guy draped all over him. His floater is better than his jumper right now but he is only a rising sophomore. Coleman is playing with Team Jacksonville this weekend and will finish up the summer with Team Parsons.
Jalen Speer (PK Yonge)
The clear leader of the Blue Wave offense, Jalen Speer looks different with his buzz cut but he still plays the same. A 6’0″ 2020 guard, Speer has scoring on his mind at all times and takes smart shots. He hit a game-winning 3-pointer off a timeout to beat the Miami Runnin’ Rebels.
Evan Hurst (Georgia Milton)
A 2020 combo guard, Evan Hurst proved to be a versatile player for Milton in the tilt against a hard-nosed Palmetto group. Hurst is a slashing guard at 6’1″ who has a good mid-range feel. He finds good areas inside and is not afraid to absorb contact. Defensively, his game is a work in progress, but he gets shots to fall offensively to make up for that.
Max Fielder (Melbourne)
Max Fielder is a big body who uses every inch of his length to his advantage defensively. The 6’8″ 2019 center wins mismatches off inbound feeds and is an underrated passer. He could stand to improve as a ballhandler and attacker.
Atriel Washington (Georgia Camden)
A big man who is willing to do the work inside with his long arms and strength is Atriel Washington. Wearing a knee brace on his left knee, he isn’t at full health but the steady play is there. Washington loves to win 1-on-1 battles offensively.
Omari Jordan/Shakur Poteat (GPI All Stars)
It is hard to pinpoint one guy from the GPI All Stars who was the best. 2020 starters Omari Jordan and Shakur Poteat made things happen for their side. Jordan, a Jones athlete was grabbing boards, speedy in transition and a nice catch and shoot guy. Poteat, an Edgewater guard was flying to the hoop for lay-ins and doing his usual damage from outside.
Isaiah Adams (Paxon)
Playing through pain, Isaiah Adams suffered an early ankle injury but continued to play after sitting a little time out. He connected on some clutch free throws late in the win over GPI All Stars. It proved to be a gritty effort from the 2020 Paxon forward. His jumper is coming along but his length and athleticism make him a player to love in terms of upside.
Ga’Khari Lacount (Coral Park)
Ga’Khari Lacount is a vocal leader who pushes the floor and flourishes as a ballhandler. The 2020 guard is not overly athletic but he’s quick and good when it matters most. He’s a finesse player who loves to get to the corners for outside shots or mid-range looks.
Kent Garard (Georgia Camden)
A long and fierce defender, 2020 Camden forward Kent Garard keeps possessions alive on both ends with skying rebounds. His shot selection is still coming together but he sets plenty up for his side with good passing and anticipation.
Jacobi Byrd (PK Yonge)
A good shooter and attacker, 2020 guard Jacobi Byrd is a legitimate energy piece for the Blue Wave. He was getting inside to score with his speed and feel for the game.
Martin Mercedes (Palmetto)
On a deep and disciplined Class 9A Palmetto unit, 2020 guard Martin Mercedes knows his role. He’s a smaller framed but is filled with burst and poise. He likes to put his head down and drive and can also shoot at a high clip.
