Prospect Spotlight: JD McCormick (2019)
As he heads into what will be a very important 17U summer, 5-foot-11 combo-guard JD McCormick is hoping he can nab his first scholarship.
Right now, he’s been hearing from a couple Division I programs. It’s just interest though, for now.
“I currently have two schools, Grambling and University of Texas-Arlington that are interested in me. This July, I just want to compete and showcase my talent,” said McCormick.
As a junior with Cheyenne, McCormick was playing in a new environment. He spent his first two high school seasons at Mojave.
He played well for the Desert Shields last season, and says it didn’t take too long for him to get acclimated to his new squad.
“They knew who I was and how I played before I even played with them. So, as soon as I started they had high expectations of me, even though I was new to the team,” said McCormick.
It’s scoring and defense that the standout junior excelled at with his new team.
“I’m a really good scorer, and I’m an improving defender. I’m a lot better defender then I used to be,” said McCormick. I like to get my teammates involved before I get going, and I can be pretty aggressive.”
All McCormick’s skill-sets will be on display this July with 702 Attack. One of the area’s best AAU teams.
And it’s then when he’s hoping to prove to college coaches that he’s a guy worth offering.
“Even though I’m not 6’4, 6’5, I’m just going to show that I can compete with anybody, any size, any weight , any age,” said McCormick.
